I have read and re-read on numerous occasions this book by Paul Hill and Thomas Cooper. It contains conversations with 22 of the key figures of 20th Century photographic history, from Paul Strand through Kertesz, Minor White and Ansel Adams. If you are interested in the concerns of some of the key drivers of photography then this is a must have book. Published by Dewi Lewis.

I can't agree more with your enthusiasm for this book Martyn . It was crucial it was compiled at that time, & I just keep coming back to it - what a great collection of the most interesting stories and observations from some of the 20th century's great artists . I particularly like Helmut Gernsheim's withering critique of the British photography establishment !

I just bought it and look forward to a good read. Couldn't resist another title by Paul Hill at the same time called "Approaching Photography".
