I pass this on for anyone mixing their own solutions that use Potassium Dichromate, and there are quite few formulas that do !

Potassium Dichromate is already hard to buy and it will become much harder to source from 2017 as the EU ban comes into force

The trick is to stock up whilst you can :D

Potassium Dichromate is also used by the textile industry for dying and it is sold there as Chrome Mordant, exactly the same a Potassium Dichromate. It can often be found there at OK prices. Here is one such offer on a fav auction site that is a current good buy.

Stock up whilst you can - I have

Just to add to Neil's post I saw this last week about the new regs - may be useful to some folks here.

Oxford ChemServe is listing potassium dichromate
http://oxfordchemserve.com/potassium-dichromate-k2cr2o7-99-100-g/

But it is out of stock at the moment. Not much of help if you're looking for it immediately. But I thought I should mention about it for future reference.

Bests,

Barry,

That's not good news .... maybe they've been jumped on by those who are paid to jump on these things!

But if you are desperate 50gs can still be purchased in this kit:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fibrecrafts-Mordant-Pack-Mordants-for-a-range-of-Natural-Dyeing-Experiments-/301374950001?hash=item462b58ca71:g:nb8AAOSw-jhUKsn8

NB. Potassium Dichromate and Chrome Mordant are the same.

£14.95 + free postage, but you will end up with some other chems that may not be of any use to you.

The last time I looked Process Supplies still sold Potassium Dichromate but it has to be sent by courier.

I've just been given a large box of raw chemicals in which there is an unopened 100g packet of potassium dichromate. I can't see myself ever using it so it's of use to anyone here PM me. There's also a nearly-full 500g jar of ammonium dichromate. I don't think I'd be able to post that though as it's marked 'toxic & explosive'!

Just noticed this post and thanks for giving Georgeweil a mention. I'll have a go tomorrow at placing an order and see if it is accepted. Sometimes it will only get posted to educational establishments or firms.

I understand that, for certain alternative processes, ammonium dichromate can be used instead of potassium dichromate but in different amounts. I have about 500g of the stuff sitting in my darkroom that I was given. I don't do alternative stuff so if anyone is interested in it they're welcome to it. please PM me.
