Seeing Dave's post about our latest sponsor, SDS, caused me to browse there. In the secondhand books section there is the above book.

It rang a bell in that I have a feeling that it has been mentioned here as a book worth obtaining. I have searched FADU but can't find any reference to it and yet this nagging feeling remains that it has been mentioned.

One of the problems is that unlike Amazon, SDS isn't a specialist book supplier and it has to trust that you know the contents. If worst comes to worst then a search on Amazon may provide the answer as to contents but even there descriptions can be very brief

Be that as it may, can anyone say what it's about and is it worth buying?

Thanks

Mike

abebooks.com has lots of copies; so, if it's a good book, we can all get one!

It seems also to be called "Pro techniques of creative photography" - at least, that title exists too, with the subtitle "The thinking photographer".

I'm away to look for reviews.

Can't help with this particular book, but perhaps the book ringing a bell is the Bill Jay book mentioned in this post: http://www.film-and-darkroom-user.org.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=11224&postcount=8 which has a sort-of similar title...

Bob, thanks. You are right it was the Bill Jay book I had seen mentioned here and was thinking of.

I hope that someone has got or seen the book and if not that Michael and Mike between them can dig out some relevant material.

Failing all that I could ring SDS, assuming of course that SDS has reviewed the book. It's probably unlikely that SDS has obtained the book without at least giving it a quick once over.

The Thinking Photographer,by Ian Bradshaw

ISBN 0-356-12153-4 Published 1986. It is some years since I read this, but it could do with reading again.

As I learned from Michael's link he took the famous picture of the streaker at what was, I think, a rugby match in 1974. It would seem that his background suggests that the book's content might revolve around photojournalism and the thought process of recognising the right ingredients for such shots but this is speculation on my part.

I haven't been able to find any actual content reviews in the abebooks website so if you have the book and fancy a quick browse through it again I'd be grateful if you'd share your findings on its content.

Thanks

Mike,I will have to be careful what I say about this book, it was given to me as a present many years ago.
It is a how to, and a how not to, take photographs book,99% colour and aimed at the point and shoot market, very well written and illustrated, but not for the user of this forum who might have books by the likes of Les McLean and Eddie Ephraums on their bookshelves.
I hope I have not ofended anyone with my comments, just my two cents worth.

Peter - I found that a helpful notice: my collection of Feininger's books will do me for the moment as general reference.
