View Full Version : Ever actually bought anyone else's prints?

This is a follow-on from the fave togs thread - I was wondering whether any of you guys had ever actually purchased any other photographers prints. They don't have to be well-known, but have you actually spent money on someone else's work or have you just gone away muttering 'I could do better than that' :)
To kick things off: many many years ago I saw what I seem to remember being one of Ansel's portfolios (they certainly seemed to be signed prints) in a bookshop on the Charing Cross Road - couldn't afford it so passed by . . and then he died and everything went pear-shaped. I haven't actually (to my shame) ever bought anyone else's prints, though would love to, but always think I really need this that or the other and end up not doing so. This being said I do own two original Joe McKenzies', which were given to me at my graduation, and I cherish them and look at them quite often. The best is a wonderful portrait taken of a Crofter in Comrie (Perthshire) taken in 1963. You have to see it to believe it - sheer quality.

My answer is yes to both, but I prefer to swop with those whose work I admire.

Not yet but there are a few photographers whose work I admire and I am thinking seriously about buying.
I do have some prints given to me and of course some excellent ones from the print exchange.

Yes, but same as above with regard to swopping, where possible.
Photographers that I've actually purchased work from, or by, in the past include:
Dorothea Lange (http://www.masters-of-photography.com/L/lange/lange_migrant_mother_full.html) (Printed by Michael Johnston - TOP (http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/blog_index.html))
Barbro Paullson (http://www.bpaul.eu/webbgalleri/horses/index.html) (Image No 9, and yes, it was made on film!)
Richard Heeps (http://www.richardheeps.co.uk/browse/dinc/fs_871.html)
Ola Bell (http://www.flickr.com/photos/oladios/2961414680/)
Paul Hill (http://www.artfund.org/artwork/9305/photographs-from-the-paul-hill--photographers-place-archive) - not this one, but the one of the girl's shadow that looks like a face.
Edwin Smith (http://www.vam.ac.uk/vastatic/microsites/photography/photographer.php?photographerid=ph050&row=5) - several
Tony Ray-Jones (http://www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/results.asp?image=10307790) and again (http://www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/results.asp?image=10307765)
Some of those of course are not around to swap with...
Work I would like to be able to buy now (if only...):
Raymond Moore
Walker Evans
Robert Adams
Steven Shore
John Blakemore
Michael Kenna
...etc...etc

No but not necessarily because I feel I can do better. I am sure that if I look long enough I'll see one that for all the right reasons I'll want to buy.

I bought prints from friends a couple of times but they were not very expensive at about 100-150 euros which is the max amount of money I'm confortable spending on artwork.
I would love to buy prints from some famous photographer, but right now with the kids going to college next year I have other priorities.
I swapped prints with other photographer sometimes, but my wife is far better at this game than me. She is a professional ceramic artist and she manage to swap sculptures every time we do an art fair.

Yes, but most have come through swaps and a few through on-line auction.

Yes, but not comtemporary. I have a couple of Sutcliffes.

Yes, I have paid for other peoples work, I have also had the good fortune to swop prints as well, many names you will all know here on FADU.
I am very jealous of Barry, as I saw a couple of Blakemores prints recently, one of them being one of his Tulip prints, and I was blown away, as it really was a thing of beauty.
At the recent Kenna exhibition I was so close to getting my wallet out, but the exchange rate at the time was not very good, which brought me to my senses, though one of his prints will most certainly be on my shopping list for the future.

Thanks for all the replies - it is interesting!
I would love to buy something original, but needs must . . and film and chemicals and paper don't ever seem to get any cheaper :D
I've never been in a swap position, so can't comment on it!

We do run a print exchange Phil. It's a good way of seeing others work in the hand.

Hi Dave - I did see that and wonder about it!
My prints aren't mounted or anything, they just tend to be air-dried, flattened under 20 tons of books and then popped into sleeves if I like them - they are archivally processed for the most part.
Would that be acceptable? Never done anything like that before . . . .

Sounds good to me. :)
The rules are buried in the Print Exchange thread somewhere; we are working on making it all a little clearer at the moment. Basically the Prints are on a maximum size of 10" x 8" paper, type, finish, and subject of your choice. Have a look through the Exchange Galleries to see what has gone before.

I too am fortunate to have two of John Blakemore's. I am also have swapped many images that are on my wall in group swaps or by contact with specific individuals! I have been commissioned to make Thomas Joshua Cooper on wet plate in the early spring and his daughters too - I wonder I could blag a print exchange :)

I am lucky enough to have a glowing Trevor Crone - not sure that TJC would be able to shine next it.

Funny enough, TJC is my initials too :)
Your work is stunning Carl, one of the reasons I'm sure he has commissioned you ;)

I prefer to buy prints from photographers whose work I admire because this helps them to make more pictures. I do swap occasionally though.

Yes, but just a few. And again, the occasional swap. Recently found one on the Web by a photographer I met at photo.net. Just have to have it.

I'm with Ian but if someone offers a swop I would not turn them down.
