I want to have a try at making a salt-print but I am not sure which type of paper is required or where to buy it.

Thanks for the list Rob. I find all the different papers available confusing though, so I was wondering what would be a good paper to start with.
I just looked at Silverprint`s website and saw that they have a paper called Arches Platine, so may be that would be OK?

personally I don't know. It's not something I have ever done. You may get some clues from:
http://www.alternativephotography.com/process_saltprints.html
you might also look at Mike Ware's site.
check out Technical Issues / Paper for alternative Printing
don't know how relevant it is for your particular use but possiblly good or you could email him for advice.

Keith,
I've just started salt printing. My first attempts were with 'Langton' paper which I got from my local stationers with art supplies pretensions. It worked, but was not fantastic. I then tried (thank-you Heather) some Arches Platine. Really worked nicely with that.
Just my 2d as an out and out beginner with salt.

I think that you will find that Silverprint offer a good price Arches Platine. When I checked they were the most competitive, they are also good for chemical supplies as well.

JackThanks Jack and Dave, it seems that the Arches-Platine paper is a good choice to begin with.

Watcha Keith,
I use Arches ordinary hot pressed, or Saunders Waterford Hot pressed watercolour paper, it works fine, you could even do the Fox Talbot thing and use ordinary writing paper for the negs and prints.
Beg, borrow, steal, or harass your local library to get Spirit of Salts by Webb and Reed, it's the best book around for alternative processes

Agreed about Spirits of salts (thanks due to Martin Reed of this ilk).
FirstCall's website lists it at http://firstcall-photographic.co.uk/shop/search/spirit+of+salts/0/argentum-press/argentum-press-spirit-of-salts-by-rwebbmreed/

Keith, if you haven't made a salt print before, I wouldn't worry about the paper at this stage. Just experiment with the process with any paper, even news paper and when you get the sort of image your looking for then look for, then refine your paper surface.

*cough* just want to point out Atlantis Art isn't on Brick Lane, it's off of Brick Lane. The correct address is
68-80 Hanbury Street
London E1 5JL
I've not tried salt prints, though, so can't comment on paper choices. Arches Platine does seem to be a good all-rounder if you want to branch out to other processes, though, and I highly recommend Silverprint as a source as Falkiner's is very expensive per sheet. I had a slight mess-up with Falkiner's too in that they gave me some cheap Fabriano instead of the Platine! Silverprint will send you the paper flat and backed with card, which is a heck of a lot easier than struggling home with a rolled up tube of paper :)
