Due to the enlarger only being switched on for short periods can anyone see a reason why I couldn't power the enlarger from the existing light circuit I have it what is now my darkroom (under stairs)?

There is certainly no problem with power consumption but if you are planning on plugging into a light socket then you will have no earth.

If you are planning to put in a socket for the enlarger on the lighting circuit then I would suggest using a round pin 2A socket. Despite being an obsolete format these are available in modern faceplate size and are commonly fitted as part of a central heating system for plugging in the pump. I have used them in house wiring for plugging in table lamps which are controlled from a wall mounted switch.

This would prevent someone plugging in something like an electric fire which may overload the system if a normal 13A socket were fitted to the lighting circuit.

Thank you Steve, appreciate your help with this.
I'll order the round pin stuff (memories flooding back) and get that sorted.

I should obviously add the usual warning about qualified electricians... blah, blah, blah but I assume you know what you are doing.

The current Part P regulations require that alterations or additions to an electrical system are either reported to building control who will inspect it or are carried out by an electrician who can self certify the work.

However, there are some exceptions and additions can be made to a lighting circuit without building control being informed.

Other exceptions are the repair of a single piece of cable in a circuit in the case of damage and the addition of a socket from a spur to a ring main. You can also change the socket and switch fronts and light fittings without informing building control.

The table at the bottom of this page lists what you can and can't do under the current regulations: http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/partp.htm

I will have a read of the regs, been a while for sure. Got a city and guilds in electrical installation a few years ago so shouldn't blow myself up but certainly do need to check i'm on the right side of the regs....

In that case, this page should tell you all you need to know: http://www.theiet.org/publishing/wiring-regulations/part-p/
