Don't be bashful, tell us more!

Title: Times Present.

The book is in collaboration with fellow photographer Harminder Singh, he has done all of the text except for a few passages. All the photographs are mine, 32 b+w images from my coastal fragments, vernacular views and white chair portfolios. There is just one image to a page, on the right hand side, the left hand side is blank except for a brief title at the bottom of the page.

It's a hard back book approx. 25x28 cm, no dust jacket, printed on 170g slightly off-white paper. So the book feels quite heavy in the hand even though there is only about 160 pages.

Harminder's text takes up about half the book and what I've read of it is just wonderful. At times very challenging, but we both feel this is what is currently lacking in UK photography books. There is too much technique, 'spoon fed' material being published. You have to turn to the USA for similar published works. I believe it's the type of book one will return to quite often as a source of reference about vision, the art of seeing and a manifesto for a personal approach.

I look forward to seeing a copy Trevor...

I have a little exhibition in Northampton with a good friend and fellow APUGER - Richard Kent.

Double Take is the title - the idea is two photographers but with different venues and two views of each. Each view being both colour and black and white. All film based images of course.

It has one week left to run.

Very nervous undertaking for both of us as neither of us has held a personal expo before.
So far it has been both exhilarating and depressing, depending on which day I've been there.

I would certainly do it again. Have sold a few - so that has given me the confidence to try again. I feel that I would want to hold something closer to home but have more confidence in the venue next time. Having said that the venue was OK.

As for a book - a few people have suggested that Richard and I publish one - so that the images in the exhibition have a little more permanence. I fancy it but my wallet is a little light at the moment!

Sounds like a very interesting exhibition. Do let us have some feedback on it when it finishes. The visitors book is usually a good read:).

I sold seven images in total. Which is seven more than I expected. The visitors book was really quite uplifting until I read an entry from one guy - Martin Parr. Don't know if it was The Martin Parr or someone else having fun. But it did rather take the wind out of one's sales.

I am now in the middle of another show - in another gallery. So far all the images that are leaving the gallery are dodgital (other photographers). But one is ever hopeful that I might make a few sales. At least they would help to offset my paper bill from Silverprint et al. The images that are selling seem to be quite traditional colourful sunsets and mountains etc. Which has surprised me a little as the gallery does seem to be quite contemporary.

The gallery is going to hold a black and white exhibition shortly - so I am looking forward to seeing how that goes.

Seven sounds like a healthy number, Mark. Well done.

If anyone's still reading Black & White Photography magazine (:p) you'll know that in the current issue I have a whole plate portrait in the Printer's Art section, shared with Leon Taylor.

It'll still be in the shops for a few days more !!

So pleased the exhibition went well Mark and selling 7 photographs is really doing well especially in this economic climate.

Martin Parr is speaking at the Arena Seminar next year why not come along and take him to task over his comments he made in your comments book? That's if he is indeed the true author of those remarks?

Sandeha I did read your piece with Leon in Printers Art and I must say I enjoyed the article very much. It looked a great image to work with.

Well, I have a little exhibition coming up for February 09 at An Lanntair (http://www.lanntair.com/) foyer in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis :-). Should have about 15 images [when I get round to finishing the printing] of three groups -'Doing' - such as this image
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3007/2814213286_8efff50eee_m.jpg and
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3232/2833892718_9baa162c96_m.jpg;
'Hebridean' such as a version of this;

and, probably a couple of cyanotypes - yet to be finalised.
Been a bit under the weather these last few days so just getting round to thinking of sorting the final images.

They look interesting, are we going to see them in an Album here, cos it's a long walk to Stornoway from Middle England.
Sorry to hear youv'e been "under the weather", hope you get out from under it soon. Hope your exhibition goes well.

Ah, "interesting" I read.
When one hears interesting is it;
*these images aren't really exhibition stuff [I agree here; I am a photographic fraud, really]
**these images are not a cohesive group [I agree here too. My mind just will not work in a linear way - I get bored easily]
***these images are an interesting way to express oneself [Not sure I agree here. But that's because I am not feeling I want to let anyone know what I really am like anyway]
****I'll say "interesting" as it sounds OK despite the the fact that I don't like the images.
***** What!
Sorry, but why interesting please?

Because I am interested in your prints which look very interesting; I would like to see more of your interesting pictures please, and I think you should post them here in a Album because others here will also be interested in seeing your interesting photographs.
I blame Steve Davis,:( interesting was a useful word before he got hold of it.
By the way have you expressed an interest in signing up for the print exchange? I'm sure some here will be interested in receiving an interesting print from you.

Regards
Interested :)

Thanks for the notes of encouragement guys. I guess I'll be an expert at pink sunsets soon Bob. Shot twenty or so at the weekend in Brighton.

I did get a copy of Sandeha and Leon's recent duel in B&W. Nice image Sandeha - both versions looked fine to me. I enjoyed the article especially having met you both.

The movement in the images by Weismar/Andrea? look pretty interesting to me - show me more...

I hope this is the right place and that it is not too forward of me, as I only joined an hour ago, to announce my exhibition.

The Momentous Decision is at The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal, Cumbria from 9th January until 10th March 2009. There will be an opening at 6pm on Friday 9th. Anybody on here who can make it will be very welcome. I have made a Blurb book to go with the show.

I will try to make the opening and if not will definitely visit at some point. I took part in a couple of group exhibitions at the Brewery in the 80's. They seemed to lose their way photographically for a while so it is nice to know they are back on track and that you are exhibiting.

Best of luck with the exhibition and book.

Thank you all for your good wishes. I finished hanging yesterday and I am very happy with the way it looks. I know my work has it's roots very firmly in a modernist aesthetic but when I stood back and looked at the finished show I was transported back about 30 years. I'm going for a post, post-modern, modernist revival. Who wants to join me?
