It seems it's Plusnet, my service provider, who are having a technical meltdown. Which means I - and a lot of other people - can't see ebay or the bbc and such at the moment.

Think of all the money that you are not being tempted to spend ebay. ;)

WHAT?!? Arent there any rules about ripping people off? I'm almost tempted to ask a question of him, and to ask him why everyone else is so very much cheaper....

That's true. I do wonder why anyone would consider paying these sort of prices; it's a puzzle.

Caveat emptor, as they say. It's easy enough to find out the true value of the stuff.

And the buyer was from Chile, so international shipping on top of that price.

Blimey, what a salesman that man is!

I had a sales job once where the price of the product (same product, mind) could vary between 1800 and 4500 pounds, depending on the negotiating skills of the buyer. I lasted a week-couldn't rip people off like that...... but this guy..........

Also have a look at the prices of what this guy has on sale as well: http://shop.ebay.com/hi-skynet/m.html . I'm just wondering who he is actually trying to bait.

I have seen numerous ridiculously priced photographic items on Ebay.
Is there a rational reason for people trying to sell at prices way above retail prices from numerous reputable sources, or is it that if they sell one item in, say, 50 they will still make a profit?
Caveat emptor (spelling? - gave up Latin when relegated to dunces class at t'grammer.) seems to apply.

I think you are correct with the 1 in 50 idea. It costs little to advertise in this way, so that ratio will turn a tidy profit for minimum effort; whatever the goods are.

The seller describes himself as "new to e-bay but not new to selling" He has 12 sales(100% positive rating) some of which were bicycle dynamo sets whose prices seem much less outrageous.

Interestingly while his 2 Rodinal sales at vast profit were to buyers in S America( Chile and Brazil) he hasn't managed to get any bids on the collective items in question which prompted the thread.

So buyers' market knowledge may yet be his undoing.

However I suspect that his bonanza on Rodinal has led him to try again as he has a "complete developing kit for sale for which he wants £134.

I think he thinks that analogue photography is the new gold mine. I went to Matt's site at AgPhotographic and priced the items and got it to about £77. So he wants to practically double his profit, knowing that if he fails he can sell it piecemeal for at least what he paid and probably a little more.

However while I think that he may have to think again about his "get rich quick plan", he has, as Dave said, almost nothing to lose and has only to find one person who hasn't researched the market to make a killing.

I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt and believe he just hasn't any knowledge of the correct and reasonable market price but on balance I can't.

We just have to hope that a newcomer to analogue desperate to give it a go doesn't succumb and then decide that analogue just isn't worth the effort at these prices.

Mike

Maybe if he gets a buyer he will then order the goods from a dealer!;)
