View Full Version : Which developer for Ilford Gallerie?

I usually print on Ilford RC Multigrade, but I bought some grade 3 and 4 Gallerie from Silverprint when it was going 'cheap'.
I have been disapointed with the results using multigrade developer as the prints lack 'depth'. Which is the best developer to use with this paper? One other factor may be that I have had the Gallerie for some time and it was not stored under ideal conditions. Any thoughts anyone?

When I tried Gallerie, many years ago, I use Dektol but I think D163 or Bromophen would also work fine.

The developers mentioned by Bill should all provide good results.
Did your negative fit the paper grade well?

I had good results with Dektol.

When I tried Galerie, many years ago, I too was troubled by the lack of depth - but I was comparing it with Agfa Record Rapid, so perhaps a bit unfair.
I do seem to recall that I got the best out of it with Dektol though, which was my standard developer at the time anyway. As Bill says - and as Trevor recently discovered - Bromophen is also a great developer and would be worth a try.

I love Galerie - it’s my favorite paper :)
It may be that your paper is old so won't give you great results but I have that is more than 20yrs old and it works just fine.
It likes strong developer (try MG Dev at 1+4 rather than 1+9) and develop it for a minimum of 3 minutes at 20C ( longer if the dev is cooler)
It also is significantly slower than MGFB - so needs more exposure.
Galerie has a different tonal shape to MGFB or MGWT FB with much more rounded heel and shoulder.
This might mean that a Neg which gives you a big deep black on MGFB will probably not give you the same depth of black in Galerie - but what Galerie will give you is a lot more shadow and highlight detail
This may or may not suit you – it depends on the personal taste of the individual.
However, if you are prepared to work with it, Galerie will yield some wonderful results that are hard to achieve with the more common MG papers
YMMV - as they say on the other side of the pond
