A very good morning to you all. Please can some one give some advice.I would like to try Tim rudmans blue toner,it's page 74 in it has a preservative (thymol 1 % solution in alcohol) I looked on the the net to buy some, and apparently it's for fungus nail treatment,is this ok to use!. I'm a little confussed. Many thanks Tonytrot.

Tony,
I have made that toner without the preservative and it works just fine. I usually use it within a month or so of making it and have found no need for the thymol but with any longer storage it may be needed.

Thymol is best obtained from a bee keeping supplier as it is used for varroa mite control in hives - If you just need a few grammes, PM me and I'll pop some in the post.

I mixed a 30% solution using Isopropyl alcohol, but you would probably be better off with a 10% or 1% to keep the maths simple.

1 gramme in 100ml of IPA would be my starting point for a 1% solution. A word of caution - Try not to get Thymol on your skin, it is a strong irritant. Not painful, but you certainly know where the point of contact is very quickly. Wash with soap & water to remove any splashes on the skin.

Tony,
I also got mine from a bee keeper. The crystals do not dissolve easily in water hence requirement for alcohol- I used methanol- but iso-propyl alcohol would be as good.

You can get them from here (http://www.paynesbeefarm.co.uk/varroa/pest-control/thymol-crystals-100g/) for about £6 per 100g.

Tim R's recipe works pretty well.

Look forward to seeing your efforts!

I know it's not quite the same thing, but I thought I'd mention this.

I have a boxed, unopened 1 litre bottle of the now discontinue Ilford Cooltone Developer looking for a good home. I am not going to get round to using it, just asking the recipient to pay the postage. I have a bottle of Warmtone (http://www.ilfordphoto.com/products/product.asp?n=36&t=Paper+Developers) gathering dust too.

We were given both CT dev and CT paper on the 2006 tour of Harman so unfortunately I cannot separate the effect of the CT paper from the CT dev as I used them together but certainly together it produced a very cold toned print that had a distinctly blue/grey look to it.
