I'm in need of a couple of push-on soft plastic lens caps, can anyone point me at a supplier?

Warehouse Express have B&W 70 mm ones in stock. What size do you need?

Alternate is http://www.enjoyyourcamera.com/Lens-Accessories/Lens-Caps:::141_18.html. They seem to have a good range of sizes.

A UK alternative could be these http://www.widescreen-centre.co.uk/Catalogue/Lens%20Caps.html

Seem to be slip on caps for filters.

Thanks Bill, I've ordered some from the Widescreen Centre.

Despite receiving an acknowledgement of my ordrer and sending three emails asking for dispatch details all I have received to date is total silence. I'm not impressed with this company.

Thought I should post in case anyone else is tempted to place an order with them.

You could also try Robert White as they can get hold of a wide range of Schneider/B+W lens caps. Not cheap though.

Dave, sorry to hear of your difficulty with the Widescreen Centre. Very poor customer relations on their part.

Push-on lens caps seem to be getting hard to locate these days. I needed a couple of odd sizes myself recently (36mm and 37mm). Had to order from the states via Ebay. One was a gorgeous metal cap, velvet lined  - better condition then the lens it's for.

I ordered a developing tank lid from calumet a while back and they sent me two lens caps instead.

Nearly a month after ordering and still nothing by way of goods or explanation. I wonder what we'd be saying of any of our sponsors if they had treated us the same way.

I had bookmarked this site after seeing that Dave had place an order. Time I removed it.

Dave - If you PM me the sizes you are after, I can have a rummage through one of many boxes at a local s/h store. Managed to find a couple of nice aluminium ones recently and there are still plenty left.

Hello !
A few years back, I recall having seen a Web site describing the way to make traditional leather and felt push on caps for large diameter lenses.
I can't put my hand onto it now, but maybe it's the way to go. These old Schneider blue lined caps are so gorgeous !
Last but not least, Schneider web site in the US list the caps for their line of lenses and offer to sell them to you. Price was far from cheap last time I looked...

I don't know what make my little push-on 37mm aluminum and blue velvet lined lens cap is. And I never thought I would go into raptures over such a thing but it is a joy to behold:D Beats those plastic caps hands down:cool:

Have you seen what metal Leica lens caps go for? £40+ on the bay:eek:

Done some searching.
Found a Tomosy book here :
http://books.google.com/books?id=0cQzRxVlgeYC&pg=PA10&lpg=PA10&dq=making+lens+cap+felt&source=bl&ots=ghZrGkgMvy&sig=cwKE-G52hsf6Zt7oGzeqbJI9QTU&hl=fr&ei=alfeTvC5Ksr3sgblhsHRCA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=5&ved=0CFYQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=making%20lens%20cap%20felt&f=false
And some felt here :
http://www.britishfelt.co.uk/acatalog/coloured_handicraft_felt.html
Forgot the leather :
http://www.columbiaorgan.com/col/skins.htm#CPL
All you'll have to add is the glue, cutter and skills !
Show us the result if you cross the bridge ;-)

Thanks George, interesting link.

Sold an old Schneider 240mm Tele-Xenar recently, still had its original leather lens caps with Schneider embossed in gold lettering, all very smart:)

Why would anyone want to put leather lens caps on a lens when it is leather which provides the proteins for lens fungus to thrive on?

Leather lens pouches and lens caps are a big NO NO in my book.

Perhaps that's one of the reasons more modern lenses have plastic lens caps, and they are cheap to produce.

Nearly all my lenses have plastic caps fitted. However I'm rather taken to velvet lined metal ones as they go nicely with my velvet hat, gloves and cravat:cool:

Hello Argentum,
You're absolutely right. So you'd better switch from leather to something like that : http://www.cameraleather.com/ or this : http://www.aki-asahi.com/store/ !
I must add that the lens cap I own are made of plywood instead of cardboard. This is important to protect the huge front lenses of large format wide angle of 105° or (if one can buy them ... ) 110°.
The one I own for my very old 300 mm Symmar has salvaged the lens from damage when the tripod felled on my backpack holding the lens. Guess where the tripod head landed ? Exactly...

Hi Lads,
I'm just out from a book repair shop. The owner is willing to make lens caps with synthetic covering outside and felt inside, with a plywood innards.
She will send me a quotation in a few days. I've told her that some other guys could be interested if price is low...
Wait and see ;-)

I thought you might appreciate an update on the sorry saga of my 3 lens caps that I ordered from The Widescreen Centre on the 9th November. They never replied to any of my three emails, even the one where I told them that I was disgusted with their (non)service and cancelled the order, but never mind.:(
Today I received 2 lens caps (the missing one will apparently follow when available) one of which is fine, the other not as it is the wrong size; but then it was probably me ordering the wrong one!
They have kindly charged my credit card the full amount so that I don’t have to worry about paying for the missing cap when (if) it (ever) turns up. Isn't that nice of them.:)
So I now have one plastic lens cap that has so far cost £22.38 and a fair bit of irritation. I doubt that I shall be dealing with the Widescreen Centre ever again.

If I understand you correctly, you cancelled the order but they never did their end?

Companies like this irritate me immensely as there is little excuse for not replying to a customers concern:mad: Which reminds me I need to chase something up!

'Customers make pay-days possible'-true enough, but they have to keep coming back. Annoying them won't keep them coming back. Comiserations, and thanks for the warning. Refusing to deal with a complaint is unforgiveable, on so many levels.

Since the thread has strayed a long way from the OP - what are the recommendations of where to buy Lens Caps ?

I tend to pick them up on Ebay. Some odd sizes can be easily located and there has been a rather nice selection of metal screw on ones of late;)

For plastic ones the store that Andrea linked to looks good, but as ever the postage cost may be a deterrent.

Dave is there a particular reason you need push-on caps rather than the usual snap-on ones? Large caps in snap on sizes seem to be relatively easy to come by.

Dave probably makes his exposures by removing and replacing the lens cap, not practical with the clip on type:D

Occasionally the threading gets out of sync. I have re-synced the forums so hopefully that should have fixed it in the longer term (until the next time...).

Hello !
I've got the pricing for the caps.
They will be made using plywood, and felt inside. the outside will be either covered with skivertex (a synthetic covering used for covering books) or leather. Price for a large Schneider 300 mm Symmar cap (87mm inner dia ) will be 56.55 € for skivertex and 58.80 € if covered with leather a piece.....
Ouch.
I think I'll order one for the rear lens group of the above mentioned Symmar in order to check the quality, and let you know...
Have a nice day !
