View Full Version : Rolleicord Vb - Film counter not locking when wound on

My Rolleicord Vb has been in regular use and never been a problem - until now. Loading a roll of Portra 400 this afternoon, having closed the back I wound on, expecting the counter to stop at '1' as usual. However, instead of it locking at that point, I could carry on winding. The 'double-exposure' lock is in the correct position.

Using a changing bag, I took the film out and rewound it (yes, it had wound on). Checked the camera, could not see anything wrong, tried again, same result. I suppose I could just watch the counter but as it is supposed to lock the wind-on knob in the correct position and always so far has done, I really would like to know where the problem might lie. Anyone?

My Va2 had the same problem, luckily it was repaired under warrenty, it turned out that the winding mechinism, very much simpler than the rolleiflex, was not engaging proper;y due to a part in the changeable counter( you undo a small screw thing and it pops out) and a lever had become loose, it was riveted back into place by the repair person and has been fine for the last 2 or 3 years, It was a fairly simple fix with the right knowledge and tools, I don't know if yours is the same problem but it might be a starting point, If you are not sure then it might be worth contacting a repairer for more info, try http://newtonellis.co.uk, one of the best repair places I know.

Thanks, Richard. I have taken the film-counter out and had a look - nothing obvious, everything seems to be free to move (and return). Have just emailed Newton Ellis via the link you posted - thanks.

I will follow this with interest as my Vb does this occasionally.

A kind person on another forum, who is obviously much better at 'Googling' than me, came up with these links:-

Rolleicord Vb film advance problem (http://www.rugarchives.org/1998-02/00330.html)
(click "Thread Next" for the response)

Rollei - Rolleicord VB - Repair Manual (http://www.central-manuals.com/instructions_manual_user_guide_camera/rollei2.php)

Having studied the links I decided that rather than try to pull my near-mint example apart, it would be much safer to send it to the professionals for servicing. Given how little use mine appears to have had, it probably has never been serviced in it's 56 years of existence. It is now on it's way to Newton Ellis (thanks for the link, Richard).

Your very welcome, Keith, I think you are wise getting the camera serviced, and in my experiances with Newton and Ellis you won't go wrong, I wouldn't let any one else touch my old cameras,
