View Full Version : Remember Me

I have been logging on and every time I tick the box marked Remember Me. It appears that it never does. Is anybody else having the same experience?

I am using a Mac and Safari. Could that be part of the problem?

Hi Bill, it will almost certainly be a Safari setting that you need to change. Most the forums seem to use cookies to remember your login details. If Safari deletes the cookie at the end of the session then the forum will not know your details.

Hope this helps,

Brian

Thanks for the suggestion Brian.

In Safari I have cookies set to accept. The message I get when I log off appears to be from vBulletin and says "All cookies cleared".

I get the identical message when I log off from APUG but that retains the details as does the UK Large Format forum.

Is it therefore a Safari problem or something in the forum software/settings?

I suspect as Brian suggests that it is a Mac/Safari problem. I've been into the Admin software and cannot see anything to change in the general settings that will change the situation. We will keep searching however. If anyone else here is using a Mac/Safari set up and can comment on there experience, please do so, this may provide a pointer to computer or system.

Hello Bill
I cant replicate your problem on my mac/safari, it logs me in automatically.

This seems to be a common problem with Safari (even on the iPhone - in that case, the cookie folder was apparently set to read-only). Snag is, there never seems to be one solution that works for all...

I have changed one option in the admin control panel which may have some bearing (but I have my doubts).

One suggestion that is easy to try is to remove the www bit of the site URL and log-in at http://film-and-darkroom-user.org.uk/VK02ccz ! No idea if it will work tho - it was a 2-year old tip on another forum...

Cheers, Bob.

Hi Fintan - Glad to know you have it sorted

BobF - That's interesting. I am logging in at http://www.fadu.co.uk/ not the URL you provided. Perhaps that is the problem.

Seems that you can get to the Forum either way. I will try your URL and see what happens.

Right I have tried the different URL with no change.

In Safari preferences there is a tab called Autofill. There is then a radio button for User Names and Passwords. Although you can edit this list you can only delete things not add them. The APUG and UK LF details are in there but not FADU. What I need to do is get the details into that.

Failing that I will just have to get used to typing the details in each time.

Try clearing your cookies for either fadu or film-and-darkroom-user domains (or both). A post I saw suggested that the problem may be caused when you enter the same site via different domain names (its example was "forum.mydomain.com" and/or "mydomain.com" but the same might apply here) Apparently it can confuse Safari's cookie handling as it gets the same cookie from what it thinks is two different sites.

Hi Bob,

I cleared all the cookies in the machine and also ditched the plist for Safari. No change. I will just carry on typing in the details. Not a problem

Ho hum: worth a try. If I spot anything definitive online re' Safari and the "Remember Me" button I'll try it but I think we've tried the main ones for now...

Cheers, Bob.

Bill,

I have just seen your 'all cookies cleared' message. I rarely log off but I did for a test. The message is definitely from vBulletin, but you should only see this when you log off manually. Just changing url's should leave you logged on.

Very puzzling?

I don't know if this is relevant, but I've just discovered something with my installation of Firefox on XP:

I've configured Firefox to allow cookies only for a session. This means that cookies are automatically deleted whenever I close the browser. However, for certain sites such as fadu I've made exceptions and in these cases the cookies are not deleted.

Despite the fact that www.fadu.co.uk (http://www.fadu.co.uk) is in my exception list I am still asked to log into the forum everytime I startup Firefox. That is, until I added www.film-and-darkroom-user.org.uk (http://www.film-and-darkroom-user.org.uk) into my exceptions. Now I can restart the browser and I'm automatically logged in when I connect to www.fadu.co.uk (http://www.fadu.co.uk).

Thanks Brian,

I have cookies set as 'Only on sites I navigate to'. I tried accept all cookies and it made no difference.

I will have a look and see if there is an exception setting in Safari.

That's because the abbreviated fadu.co.uk & .org.uk are redirecting you to this site which lives under film-and-darkroom-user.org.uk :) All designed to save Frank's finger tips.
