View Full Version : Print Exchange Round 52

Tony Marlow
12th April 2013, 06:11 PM
I won't be able to organise Print Exchange Round 52 for May as I will not be around from the end of April to well into May which means it will be too late to organise it so Round 52 will have to be in June.

The latest date for registering your entry is 31st May 2013 and the latest date for sending your print is 30th June 2013. Anyone wishing to join can post here from now until 31st May and send me a PM to confirm your address. I am sorry about the delay but I can't see any way round it.

Print Exchange Rules
To start with you will have the remainder of this month to sign up, the cut-off being the last day of the month. If you wish to be included then make a post on this thread to that effect, and at the same time send me a PM with your name, and address.
Head the PM with the title “FADU Print Exchange Round”, and add the round number
At the beginning of next month those that have given me their details will be provided with the name and address of one other member to whom you will be expected to send your print before the end of the month.

You will not be told who has been asked to send you a print, so that it remains a surprise until you receive it. When you send your print please post to that effect on this thread, but do not say to whom you have sent it. We like to maintain the element of surprise until the last moment. When you receive a print please post to that effect on this thread, you may say who it is from and comment on it if you wish.

Anyone failing to send out their print without good reason will be excluded from future events. If you run into difficulty in this respect then please let me know.
If you wish to participate then confirm your intention on this thread and also send me a PM with your name and address.

The selection process will be as random as possible, and I will try and ensure that you receive a print from a different person in each round although eventually there will be some repetition.

Rules
• Your print must have been printed from a negative exposed in a film camera
• Inkjet, digitally printed photographs, or computer manipulated images are not allowed
• Your print paper can be any size that will fit in an envelope up to A4 size
• The image may be any size or format
• Paper type and finish is your choice, as is the subject
• Alternative processes, toning or other treatments are all accepted
• It is recommended you provide some background information with your print to assist your recipient as this encourages interchange
• Don‟t forget to enclose your details and FADU name so your recipient can thank you
• You are only responsible for the cost of posting your own print
• Please ensure you dispatch your print within the round month
• You must enjoy the experience
• If you have any queries or problems -please contact me as soon as possible.

Don't run one myself, but there's a whole crop of classics come out the shed every summer. in fact, The Lewis Car Club has a picture of an Escort as the masthead on their website.

Hmppph! My print is just about done and I had hoped to be the first to announce that it was in the post but you seem to have beaten me to it Stan!.. but I have just noticed that you say that your print will be on it's way tomorrow - June 17...??? Do you only get a once a week pick up of mail as today = Sunday, is the 9th of June, which makes tomorrow = Monday, the 10th of June?

Even so, just thinking, my print hasn't got as far to go as yours so I could still be the first to get it delivered?! :)

You would think that I was really competitive or something wouldn't you??? You should see me when playing board games!!! :D

And arrived safely today! I was delighted to find it waiting for me when I got home this evening. It is a well composed and atmospheric shot of an old doorway in a Portuguese village. Received a unusual print from chisel today. Unusual in that it was of

And picked up off the mat 5 minutes ago now I'm back from picking up a fantastic 7 foot fibreglass sink from Hereford.

Many thanks for the very nice print of a Vulcan Bomber Alex, I have fond memories of one of these when we had a low flypast from one at Plymouth Airport's Airshow in the mid 60s the noise was incredible as it went over the grass runway before flying upwards full throttle at about a 45 degree angle. It was the loudest thing I had ever heard until about an hour later when an English Electric Lightning did much the same thing but with it's afterburners on, absolutely amazing noise.

And received it here yesterday - nicely printed shot of a wooden church. I imagine it was a tough enough shot to print as the church is white, and the light is hard enough. Nevetheless, there is good detail held in the whites, no mean feat!

Thanks, Ed. I'm glad it arrived safely and you liked the subject. The Vulcans used to waken me in my tent when I camped as a youngster in Ardnamurchan. The noise was incredible, but they were gone by the time you got out to look. The same museum also has a nice example of the EE Lightning. Another fine aircraft. Alex

..And arrived in Dublin yesterday; a really interesting print taken with a 35mm vintage camera - an Arrete 1A - that I had not heard of previously, but looks really nice having looked it up on-line.

The neg is Foma 400 rated at 320 and developed in Rodinal 1+50. I mention this as the print has a very noticeable grain and, unless it is a crop from the neg, I would not have expected such noticeable grain from this combination. I hope you will post the print Richard, as it is really useful to see the results should anyone be interested in achieving this very pleasing grainy look.

Just home from work to find a print waiting!
From Bill, its a view of Hebden bridge, taken on PanF in a Mamiya 7ii.
First off, by God it's sharp! I don't know if it's some magic Voodoo lens/film/developer combination but at 10x8 it's crispy. If this was sharper you'd need safety goggles to look at it.
Next, the choice of longer lens (150mm) flattens the perspective just enough to make the image very graphic. Last up, a single tiny figure is caught in the very centre of the image, as Bill says, like some post-apocalyptic survivor. Think '28 days later' or 'Omega man' and your in the ballpark!
All in all, gratefully received.

Got it yesterday

A great shot taken in the Outer Hebrides, a place I have never been but always wanted to. I think the shot shows the place extremely well and I am always intrigued about the lives of people who would live in a house like this, how idyllic it looks, but how hard it must be most of the year.

Hi Vincent, received yesterday. Looked like it got held up in post/customs as post code was incorrect. Lots of scribbles on the envelope from various people but thankfully arrived safe and secure!

A very nice shot and having followed a number of your previous posts, I'm a fan of the infrared and appreciate the somewhat 'hit and miss' nature of it (unless it's just me doing things wrong?!).
So, great composition/framing, great exploitation of infrareds ability to turn foliage into something more magical; the ivy against the black abyss of the window works well and the stone work has great detail so well metered. Poss a different way of composing the pic would have been to centre the window (i.e. crop a bit of the left hand side and top) but each to their own! 

In the past I’ve used the Efke film and metered at 2/3/4 ISO so was intrigued by your letter explaining that you metered this at 640 ISO. Is this the norm for Kodak HIE or could I do similar with the Efke? Or does the developer also have an impact on the metering?

Thanks for sending and apols for the delay in posting a reply, Simon

Hi Simon, glad you recieved my print, the post code that I used was NG20 5SX as was advised to me. The important thing is that the print did arrive.

When Kodak HIE was still being produced I rated it at 400 ISO and bracketed it two thirds of a stop either side of that. I always used a Red 25A filter on my camera. Now since my film stock is long past its use by date I have upped its ISO rating to 640 and still bracket 2/3rds of a stop either side of that. I doubt very much if that rating would suit Efke. If you have film in stock you could experiment with it at different ISO ratings as long as you keep notes. I don't think that a change in the developer will effect the metering. At any rate it is best to alter only one factor at a time.

Good luck with your photography.

Indeed Terry, like a lot of people I knew the red filter was the only easy option to use. To use an opaque filter always seemed like a lot of hard work to me, between focusing , measuring exposure and the constant need of a tripod all before you put the filter into place. At ISO 400 handholding was no problem. Nowadays I must admit I am inclined to use my tripod more frequently.

Thanks for the comments and glad you are enjoying the print.

I think the sharpness is down to the lens quality, using a tripod and Pan F Plus, plus of course careful focussing both in the taking and the enlarging stages.

As you say, "the real "feeling" of the print is hardly reproducible on a screen" and I feel a lot of people are going to be let down by the screen picture after reading your comments... :(

Received Saturday Cesare, thank you for both prints - I think the happy accident of the bulb exposure is interesting, I like the surreality of the light trails, it has a real impact, not something I'll be trying myself very often though! It's a lovely picture to have, thank you.

The "straight" print is also appreciated. Well composed, deep blacks but with detailed retained, full of the symbolism of expectation, arrivals, departures, and perhaps loss, as the immediate train platform is empty. Thanks again, I like them both - please scan both to the gallery.

Beautifully composed view of a unmade road with a dry stone wall to the left and a standing stone on the right, mountains in the distance and oppressive clouds in the sky. Very much to my taste and another example of how much work I need to do!

Thanks Bob

Apologies, due to family problems I posted mine today. I hate 30 day months, they should all have 31.

And arrived today!

A snow scene with a brooding sky and printed with a wonderful 3-D quality about it.

Thank you.

Received yesterday a print from Simon, and I think part of his 'DEAD SQUARE' project. I must say I love the print, in square format, of what seems to me at any rate, bird feathers. Ilford Mutigrade FB Velvet Stipple is a paper I'm not familiar with, and now one I wish I was familiar with. It has a lovely texture and feel. The tones on the print are lovely as well. This is very impressive Simon. Thanks for the offering! Stefan

Received today an excellent print from Graeme Stark. Shows what is I presume a "fast food" chef in his kitchen under difficult lightine conditions in an indoor covered market, Singapore. One I enjoyed & admired.
