Dear Terry,
A valuable lesson from my distant pass has stood me good stead in the intervening years. In the early years of the camera club that I help found a new member showed up one night and he seemed to know all about photography and used quite freely the terms associated with it. He offered to put on a slide show for us featuring his work. We were thrilled, ‘At last someone who knows his way around our hobby’ will give us guidance. Come the night of the slide show and we had a full attendance eager to be shown the road to enlightenment. The show began but after the first 10 minutes, we soon realized that his work was more or less rubbish. A workmate of his told me afterward he was the same about golf, as regards how to grip the club, take the proper stance and how to hold your head. But for all of that he could hardly strike a ball if his life depended on it.

So I decided on one of my principles of photography ‘ When people spout off about it, I say show me your work and then I’ll decide if I’ll take anything you say seriously. I’ve seen your work so you can guess how I might be rating your opinion. But some pointers In B&W photography it is the light areas that catch the eye and not the dark. And to complete your critique with the expression ‘A good print overall though and I do like the panoramic format’ just how cliché is that. Apart from the positive feedback that my print received on this site here are a few more from an international photo site 1. ‘Those clouds...*swoon*. A lyrical and beautiful photograph.’ 2 This is stunningly good, a perfect vista for the Xpan. 3 Bravo, a vista worthy of the treatment given to it by your excellent visual skills Vincent Brady. 4 Excellent photograph - I can only bow down before its beauty!

As a judge maybe you have reached the stage where you only see faults and the beauty of the photos pass you by.
Sometimes it is better to let sleeping dogs lie. In the meantime take care of yourself.

Cheers
Vincent
