This picture was taken about a month or so ago(?), when we had snow here for a few days, at my local graveyard.
Taken on a Pentax MZ5N, with the kit 28 - 70mm lens and HP5 Plus. The film was developed at ISO 400 in Rodinal, 1 + 25, with minus 20% development. I decided to use a glossy surface for the print as I thought that it would give the subject a bit of sparkle, even though it’s not my favourite surface. I much prefer the matt / lustre papers of late or occasionally pearl, which was my favourite for years. Initially printing on Ilford RC grade 2 1/2, in fresh Ilford chemicals, I got a very flat print that came up looking mid greyish over all the print. I then tried grade 3 1/2 but that was similar but just a bit darker. So, another out of the ordinary decision was called for = a bit of split grade printing. I have read loads on the subject but to date have not tried it out and tested the working methods that I have learnt. Anyway, after a few prints, I was happy with one, which was exposed for about 2/3 exposure on grade 2 1/2 and 1/3 exposure on grade 5 to bring up some of the shadows. Overall, it’s quite subtle and not my standard type of print as I like lots of contrast in my prints generally but given the subject and the range of tones in the neg / on the subject on the day, I was relatively happy with the final print which had a quick wash and was then air dried. |
