Taken on a Mamiya C3 TLR about 12 years ago. A friend and I had gone to North Wales to photograph the coal tips above the village of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Easy to see how the Aberfan disaster of 1954 occured!

When I first saw this picture my immediate thought was that it needed a vertical crop. Having looked again I'm wrong - this way the mass of the slag heap is really emphasised and makes for a quite frightening picture. Pictures are often called "haunting" -this one certainly is.

Well done Derek and thankyou for sharing it with me.

Sorry to appear pernickety, but they are not coal tips. it is all slate waste from the local quarries. The Aberfan disaster was in 1966 not 1954.

Nice to know somebody is checking the facts John. Memory starts to fade as age advances!

I like the social observation, the goalposts in such close proximity to the housing and the slate-pile, is that a chapel there too? Despite the strong nods to community, it speaks to me more of danger and hardship. Interesting picture.
