This picture was taken recently as part of one of my University projects, where I am documenting Ďa dayí at a local Jewish Care home.

Iím not Jewish or even religious myself, but I volunteer there two mornings a week, overseeing two classes. I have often joked about becoming Jewish (if that is possible?), just so that I can retire there in about 20 years time!

The picture was taken at a Karaoke afternoon at which I built up the courage to do a few solo spots and was well received. Smile

The camera used was a much used and loved Pentax MZ5N and a F1.4 50mm lens with Ilford HP5 plus film, developed in Ilford Ilfotec LC29 film developer and other Ilford chemicals, which I also used at the printing stage. The paper used was Ilford MGIV RC Pearl, although I have taken a liking to Satin as well as FB papers of late, WHEN I have the time to use them...

A little touching up was needed on the print, for it doesnít seem to matter how careful one is, there is always a few white spots that need covering and itís something that Iím not very good at, despite all the practice I get!

I like the tonal range in this picture. The old chap really looks as though he is enjoying himself! Well seen and caught Terry.

A very sympathetic shot.

It can be difficult sometimes not to stereotype a vulnerable group or to be overly sentimental.

I think you've found a nice balance in this image. I hope the rest turn out just as strong.

I took a copy of the print into the centre this morning, as I was volunteering today and the guy in the picture was really chuffed to get the print. Smile He totally was not expecting it.

In enjoying himself at the time, I don't think he even realised that I had taken his picture = even though I was only about 3 foot in front of him when I did LOL.

BUT I did use a f1.4 50mm lens with NO flash, so he might have thought that as the flash didn't go off, I never took a picture!

I also heard some other nice comments being made as I hobbled away to my group, which pleased me.

It really adds to my enjoyment of photography and makes it feel all worthwhile when you get that sort of response! Smile

It's great when someone enjoys what you've done. This is a really good candid portrait- and they're not the easiest subject. I also like the burn-in across the top of the frame which helps hold your attention on the face. Interestingly, there's another image recently posted, and the photographer is asking advice on burning in a background without it being "too obvious". Sometimes a good, dramatic print can be really satisfying without being completely natural (how about Jean Loup Sieff's portraits?).
Fine work, Terry.

Thanks for the comments Skellum. Smile

I also had to look up Jean Loup Sieff's portraits, as I've not heard of him before or the majority of his subjects on his site.:) There's some great work on there.

I will try and find the other print on this gallery that you mention to take a look at and maybe comment on.
