Paul's print is on the left, my one on the right.

This shot was taken on the banks of the river Adur upstream of Shoreham. I was out for a walk with my trusty Fuji GA645 and came across this boat. The light wasn't great, and I took a couple of shots handheld.

The film was Fuji Acros, and using the handy 'it prints the speed and aperture on the neg' I can tell you the shot was 1/45th at F4.

Of the two shots I took, one was focussed at infinity and the boat wasn't sharp enough - that was my bad I think. The second much closer shot was the one i've printed here, with the boat in focus and infinity rather soft. Armed with a tripod i'd have attempted to get more depth of field, and i'd also have shot higher up to stop the boat hitting the horizon although now looking at it I rather like the composition.

The only other thing to know about the shot was that the sky was overcast and dull - i send the sky shot I used for the print along with the negative to Paul.

My print of the boat was 'straight' with no attempt to dodge the dull sky. I seem to remember it was grade 3.5 on my enlarger, and I just timed it to get a bit of umph into the foreground.

Between exposures I didn't move the easel, just blocked it out with a larger bit of paper, and so the new sky was very roughly aligned where I thought made sense. I relied on the AF of the enlarger to do the right thing with focus, but for the clouds I chose it wasn't going to make much difference if the focus was a bit out.

I chose clouds to fill the top left of the frame as that was where my eye was drawn without a sky to help balance, and I kept the sky light enough to not challenge the foreground darkness.

Comparing paul's print, he has roughy the same density for the boat, but he has burnt the bridge and distant trees. In addition, he has used a funkier bit of sky than I chose with the sun poking through the clouds, and I think from his description dodged the original which may have given him a bit more lattitude with sky exposure to avoid it all going a bit grey and drab.

Thanks very much paul - this has given me some things to think about. I'm planning on making a 16*20 of this print so i've now got a few more things to think about!

Wow! Apart from the different skies, you've both printed in a very similar fashion.

Love both prints but have to say I like the extra little bit of sparkle / brightness in the water and the sky that the print on the left has.

Well done both.

Yes, only going by what I can see on the screen the left print has a bit more punch so looks a tad more lively.

Paul looks to have done a grand job with the sky!

Agreed, paul's version has more punch, and the extra density on the bridge is a definite win! ;-)

I am fortunate to have two enlargers in my darkroom so was able to set each one up with the selected negatives. The boat was printed at G2.5 with the middle distance consisting of the bridge and far shore getting an additional stop of exposure. The upper half was completely masked out during the first stage.

The paper was then transferred to a second easel for the sky printed at G5 - The lower half being masked off fully and the join loosely dodged. Reasonably happy with the result, but the (poor) quality of the two easels show - There is a noticeable disconnect on the left hand side.

Comparing the two prints, my horizon is quite a way off being horizontal - Must pay closer attention next time.

Great bit of added extra info and the larger pictures give us much more to look at.

It would be good if more people gave this type of info at the beginning when uploading pictures and a much larger picture on this site rather than a link to another one would be also be good. Is there any chance of this I wonder?... Smile

PS I must say, I didn't even notice the wonky horizon, so it obviously dosn't affect the print overall, at least not for me.
