Steps, Avon River, Dartmoor National Park

This image was taken on the Avon River in Devon about 1/2 a mile below the Avon Dam. The water seen is the compensation flow which is released from the Dam at all times regardless of whether the Dam is 'spilling' or not.

The image was taken on my Canham MQC 5”x7” Metal View Camera using an 80 year old Wollensak 159mm f9 lens on 5"x7" Fomapan 400 film which was rated at ISO250, the exposure was 1/10th Second at f32.

Using my Minolta Spotmeter F I took a reading from the shadow area of rock just above the grasses in the centre of the frame, I then subtracted 3 stops from this reading to get my taking exposure. I was very pleased to see that there is a large amount of detail in the shadows.

The film was processed in a Jobo 3006 Expert drum on my Jobo CPP2 processor set for 25 degrees and I used Divided Pyrocat HD with a process time of 6 minutes each for both A & B solutions, this was followed by a water rinse, before being fixed in TF-3 Alkaline Fixer, then washed and dried.

I used the Divided Pyrocat HD as I wanted to see if the Compensatory Action would prevent the whites being completely blown out which is usually the norm with this type of image. This worked well and it did expand the range of tones in the negative.

The negative was split grade printed on 8”x10” Ilford Multigrade IV RC Pearl finish with a 13 second base exposure at grade 3.5 along with a 4 second exposure overall at grade 1.5, and a final light vignetting exposure of an additional 4 seconds again at grade 1.5, this was developed for 1.5 minutes at 24° C in Ilford Multigrade Developer in a Nova Tank.

I like this, Ed. It's a really natural looking image that is full of detail. I have heard much praise for the Foma film, and it seems to be justified. I intend getting some with my next order. Alex.

I like this a lot, the scan, as usual does not do justice to the actual print,as a long standing user of Fomapan 400, in 120 and 35mm you have made good use of the films unique tonality, Thanks again Ed for another addition to my growing collection

Catches the summer's day look very well. It might just be the scan but the areas under the bushes on the edge of the water all appear to have no shadow detail at all. I wonder if you'd had only subtracted two stops to get zone III whether you'd get more shadow detail.

That assumes that more shadow detail is desirable which of course you may have decided isn't.

Thanks for your comments gents.

There is actually some detail in the shadows under the trees but I was more interested in keeping the highlights under control, although I took my spotmeter reading from the dark area fractionally to the left of centre about a 3rd of the way up, I then subtracted 3 stops from that reading to give me my exposure.
