This months print was made on a sheet of paper from a new box of ADOX Satin RC that I've just got and at first look, I like the tones that it gives very much. Smile

Anyway, whilst thinking what to print for this round, I came across some negatives that I took one summer, years ago now, when I volunteered on an American Summer Camp, in between college terms in the early 80's. I spent a couple of months teaching young lads aged from about 8 to 15 years, the basics of taking, developing and printing black and white film before embarking on my first holiday visit to the USA for three weeks, visiting Florida and New York. What memories of that summer I have!

As I try to take new material for each round, it should be know that these negs are now close to 30 years old and doing fine. Makes one wonder if digital files will be still readable after this length of time?

The negative was taken with a Praktica MTL5B totally manual camera, in the days when I refused to buy the all new singing auto focus thingy cameras, as my eyes were more than capable of focusing thank you very much = a very different story today when I now quite happily use the AF!

As I was supplied with Kodak materials to use, it was taken on Kodak film and developed in D76. The original prints would have been printed on what ever version of Kodak multigrade RC paper was about at the time in guess what... Kodak chemicals. Smile

The camp was called Camp Airy in Maryland, just south of New York and I remember it being a very hot summer with long periods of 40C day temperatures, with bright sunshine most days.

The negative is slightly contrasty, but it printed well in my opinion, straight onto the paper with a grade one filter.

At the time of taking, the young lad in the picture would have been about 12 - 13 years of age, so could easily now be a father who is or has sent his own children to camp.

A bit late being put onto the gallery but better late than never eh?

For me this is a very timely print- I've recently been looking through some old negatives, and have been toying with reprinting them just to see if I've learned anything.
I really like how directly you've approached your subjects here. Easy to produce a harsh negative in such bright conditions, but you've handled it well Terry. As a group we seem a little shy of photographing people (I am including myself) so refreshing to see a portrait for once.

Thanks for the comments Skellum. Smile

Yes, we don't see that many portraits on the site for some reason, do we?.

I'm sure I'll find some other negs that I want to print when I get time to have a look through the contacts and negs and hopefully, my improved (?) printing skills from all the practice since they were originally taken, will produce some better prints. We shall see.

Terry, the grade one filter has done the job here. It's a good straight print. We, in the U.K. tend to not appreciate the light intensity in U.S. summers at upper thirties latitude.

I always thoughts that Adox RC came in two surfaces. Glossy and what it called Semi-Matte. Is Satin and Semi-Matte the same surface or is this a third surface as in Ilford's Glossy, Pearl and Satin

Thanks

Mike
