Hi Alex. Thanks for posting this. I know that viewing on a monitor is not the same as viewing a print, but I personally prefer the toned version of this. 'Why' is a harder question.
Perhaps the toned version is visually richer in some way. Perhaps it taps into some unconscious expectation I have that old looking subjects are suited to old looking photographs?
I make some stereograms, and I have found myself toning the dinky little prints in sepia to get rich browns. Somehow it feels 'right' for them. Old technique, old looking prints.
Of course, how we feel about print colour is very subjective. I have a friend who pretty much hates warm toned images.
Either way, I still really like this image.

Thanks again, Colin. The toned version came from a print identical to this. The toning, however, gave it a lighter feel.

Yes, thanks for showing an un-toned version of the print Alex. I like them both but the toned one feels more exotic and mysterious.
