I rekon this is a great image. OK so its been done many times before, but in this case the mist has done a fantastic job of isolating the tree against a featurless background which makes it really stand out.
Interestingly, the gallery software downsize wrecks the effect and only when you go to the full size version does it looks really good.
And on that not note, I discovered the other day that you can sharpen with GD libraries. Look up the "imageconvolution" function which if added to the downsize would add some sharpening making the smaller images look better.

Hi Rob, I looked into this and concluded that a more important tweak would be to see if we can reduce the overall compression applied to the image by GD. I tried sharpening the reduced image on my PC and it just made things worse as it also sharpened the (quite considerable amount of) compression artefacts in the image.
When I get a chance, I will see if I can find the point in the php code that creates the reduced image and see if we can't tweak it. Once we can get a decent image, largely free of artefacts, we can then look at sharpening it.
