Have you worked out the true meaning of the arrow carved in the lower part of the left gate post yet, Andy? Perhaps someone can help? It's interesting how it mimics the form of the wooden gate.

That's a tertiary benchmark, is it not? Used for mapping in the days when it was done by people wandering the countryside with a theodolite and staff. You can get the altitude of the line by applying to the Ordnance Survey (and paying the fee??)
