You've managed the highlights and shadows exceedingly well.

Thanks Alex, Marty and Richard for the positive comments - much appreciated.
It needed a little more work than usual - there were 4 small reflections/highlights in the shadows which required burning in individually and then I gave the whole of the right side an additional burn-in, as the wine cooler was very bright. The negative shows a lot more detail in the shadows than I've printed here, by the way - for example there's a jacket hanging on a hook to the right of the big guy - but I didn't want too many distractions from the brighter areas of the shot.

Good shot. Night-time shots often need HP5 @1600 or even D3200 @ 3200 and the usual caveats is that you lose a lot of shadow detail at those speeds but it hardly matters for these night scenes in my opinion.
I used to like the Micky Spillane/Humphrey Bogart type B&W films which often had a high contrast, lack of shadow detail, bar scene. In these Mike Hammer or Sam Spade says: "I was worried; the barman was big and ugly but then I remembered that I was just as big and twice as ugly and it was OK :D

The on-screen scans are not of great quality (is it time we discussed the 200k file size?) but in the flesh this is a really nice print. I've sometimes printed 'for drama' and been happy for it to show that I've manipulated the print. I've also tried to be subtle and still had the burn-edge visible. Although Michael says there was some tricky burning-in on this, it is really well done. No edges, no halos- very subtle.

Thanks Mitch. I was reminded by another FADU friend that there used to be a cat on the ceiling...many moons ago when the pub was called Hatchetts. I was a student in those days (early '80s) and this was a biker's pub (scary place) but the music upstairs was worth the risk on occasion
