Good morning Terry.
Thanks for taking the time to consider my original print.
The picture was taken using a 90mm lens on 5x4. The original composition was partly determined by how close I could get to the rocks. For this shot, I'd taken off my boots and set up the tripod partly in the water. It gave me a bit more blank sky than I wanted, so in printing I cropped out part of the sky and kept the full image width.

Your crop actually brings the image back much closer to the original 5x4 format- rather as if the image had been taken with a slightly longer lens. Your version is 'tighter' overall, so feels more dynamic.
I think your right, and it's a crop I just didn't see in the darkroom.
Thanks again,
Colin

My pleasure to comment Colin. Smile

Personally, I think a blank sky works with this large expanse of water. I think a cloudy sky would have put the picture out of balance somehow.

All the best,

Terry S

Hello Colin,
I've just joined up, so wanted to make a few posts.
I've done work like this using a pinhole camera, where you have a long exposure. Did you use a neutral density?
I like the composition, moving outwards from the right side.
Regards
Howard

Good evening Howard.
Thanks for your interest.
This made use of a deep red (8x) to lengthen exposure.
The lens used stops down to f64, and this combination on a very dull day gave a metered exposure of 4 seconds. Allowing for reciprocity failure this let me shoot two frames, one at 8 seconds and one at 10. This is the 8 second version (I think!).
This is HP5 at 200, but often I use Fomapan 100 at EI 50.
That would have metered at 16 seconds, and with reciprocity I'd have had a time two and a half minute exposure. That would really have taken all detail out of the sea.
