I love backlight photographs and this is a great example. The dodging in the foreground and of the castle, as described in the letter, i just right. The airy freshness of the sun living up the scenery is perfectly captured. The castle shows, but not too much. More light to the castle would give an artificial impression of a building in the shade.
I looked the location up. We have friends in Metz, which we visit regularly, and this is not far away. The photograph invites us to visit the site!

We've only explored the area a tiny bit because of limited time, but it's definitely worth a visit if you're ever in the area.
