I took this photograph of Quentin Crisp in May 1981 in his dressing room at the Mayfair Theatre, London. It was one of the last of his UK shows before he moved to the USA.

The image was used recently as a book cover - 'I'm An Englishman In New York'.

I'm hoping to offer, gratis, a vintage 12x16 version printed on Agfa Record Rapid S III to the National Portrait gallery. I would be deeply honoured if they accept it for their archive.

A great portrait of this interesting character Trevor. Love the tones from the Portriga Rapid paper. Did Quintin get to see the image ? If so I hope he was impressed! This must have been difficult to do in the confines of a dressing room and the use of the mirror is most effective. Congratulations on the book cover too :-)

All the best with the offer to the NPG.

Thanks Neil.

Yes, he did get to see the image as I sent him a set of 8x10 photographs from this session. In fact he still had this print in his estate when he died which is how it came to be used on the book cover. Which I still have not received payment or copy of book as promised, such is life. :-/

Here is the book link, only available in German. Which is helpful :-))

Stunning portrait. The NPG would be crazy to turn this down -- but if they do, I might be able to find space in my archives ;-)

Trevor,

Quentin must have approved then if he kept a copy :-) Pity about the lack of payment for use on the book though :-( I must say it looks good on the cover - even with the oval crop.

I agree with Mark about the NPG and this image. Everything about it is so perfect. The use of the mirror was a master stroke :-)

Thanks guys your kind comments are much appreciated.

Good news - just had an email from the NPG and although they have several photographs of Quentin Crisp they feel mine will be a worth while addition to their achieve. Hope to deliver it in person in the new year ;-))

Quentin Crisp was a very kind and thoughtful person who gave freely of his time to permit me to take his photograph. In fact I took 10 shots that day and this was the second on the roll. I remember it well for I shot this from the doorway of his dressing room. Everything in the shot was as is, I never moved anything. The wine glass was there ready - he said he always liked a glass before his stage performance.

I actually saw his show just months before he left for the States. One of the things he said that I'll always remember, is that he only washed the dishes when the pork tasted of fish!

There is a programme about the latter part of his life on 28th December ITV1, 9-10.30pm - 'An Englishman in New York' - again he is played by John Hurt who also palyed him in 'The Naked Civil Servant'.

Ooooooops...that should have been 'their archive', not 'their achieve'. Looks as if I've started my Christmas drinking a little early ;-)

Yup. Superb portrait.

Makes me wonder what other portraits might be in your archive, Trevor?

Thanks Sandeha - not many portraits sadly - just family and some old friends taken many years ago.

Having seen and been inspired by our very own Carl Radford's stunning work (I have an original palladium print of his ;-)); I may start to do some more portraits.

It isn't often I see an image and think 'this is an iconic photograph', this is one of those moments. Congratulations with the NPG acceptance. Paul

P.S. Was this the inspiration for avatar pose Trevor? ;-)

Wow, thanks Paul - not sure about the avatar pose, not consciously anyway - just caught in a reflective moment by a friend ;-)
