I am always looking for old street scenes in towns unfamiliar to me when I get the opportunity visit. Are these images too mundane for general viewing? Should I have included a passer by? I can't help the weather!

I enjoy the perspective that the wide angle lens has given here, emphasised by the dark bands of the railings and wall. I also think there is sufficient interest from those and the architecture not to require a figure. The lamp post fills the left-hand side nicely, but I do find the curve induced by the same lens distracting, or was it really that shape?

Thanks for your critique Dave. I really could not make up my mind as to the need for a figure. It was a quiet day so there wasn't any one around to try both options.

Ah the lamp post, That has worried me ever since I printed the image! I have just re-examined the negative to make sure that the 'not inexpensive' Nikkor Lens used was not causing the distortion. The lamp post on the negative looks quite straight but leaning in slightly. It was a hand-held exposure, so I don't expect the lens to have been completely vertical. Perhaps it was the enlarging lens?

Thinking further, I am using AN Glass in my enlarger so I have to manually line up the negative to the centre of the glass frame (5x4 carrier). Could it be that the negative is off centre and not in the optimal path for the lens?

Barry, I agree with Dave, it’s a strong enough shot that doesn't need anything else in the frame.

However, have you considered loosing a few rows of bricks from the bottom of the frame?
(I am not sure they add anything and seem to distract from the architecture)

Removing the cobbled path just beyond the metal inspection cover does indeed improve the image. Thanks Martin.

Have you thought about shooting this at night/dusk? There is nothing wrong with it (the distortion of the lamp post is odd) but personally I agree with your own analysis, in that I find it a wee bit empty - almost as if it is the context for something else but without the something else. Shot at night, perhaps with something happening... even if that was a cat or figure, it might be stronger. After rain might help too, bu expanding the range of tones.

Thanks Tom, I would love to go back and re-take it on a wet night. I have been thinking of trying more night scenes.
