This image is one of a portfolio I made in Oct 2008 on the Island of Spinalonga off Crete, the islands nickname is The Island of Tears because up to the early 1950s it was a leper colony.
This lith printed photo was taken in one of the wards in the old hospital.

Wow - how stark is the atmosphere here?! No sense of the warm Cretan sun in this room. Very evocative.

Ideal subject for a lith print with the cool tones working well. A very striking image that captures the place well. The hook in the ceiling casts sinister overtones but I expect it was used for something useful rather than sinister. Very good control of the lighting situation and beautifully printed.

Neil.

It's an amazing place. In some ways it looked as if it has just been vacated. My visit was 1995. If I recall correctly the fittings for the fluorescent lighting in one of the bigger rooms were still there as if the electricians were about to come back the next day.

It was so hot that day that you couldn't hold the rails on the boat that took us there and yet once in the buildings and listening to the guide I forgot about the heat.

Brings back memories. Thanks

Mike,
This Hospital building was not open to the public when I was there in 2008 H&S stuff but I managed to bribe my way in.
I spent 4 days photographing every bit of it and ended up with a panel
of images that I'm very happy with.
Thanks JON.
