The print was split toned 1+19 selenium and a light bleach and thiorea. It is scanned in grey scale as the colour mode makes it pink and green etc. all a bit weird!

Perfect tonal range, specially the h/l so bright. I find it conveys perfectly the atmosphere. Was the original print more on the brown side?

Cheers, Marty.

The original print is a glorious warm brown/black with great detail. Due to this the tree on the left really "shines" in a way that probably cannot be replicated on a scanner.

It may be the brown/black tones or the scenery, the timelessness of the scene and its simplicity but with the two people it has a feeling of Victorian romanticism about it.Tony has been able to simplify the scene superbly. There are no conflicting themes vying for attention.

However none of what I have said above covers what I regards as the "unique" nature of this scene.

Any guesses?

It appears to have been taken from the middle of the river Mike?

Is it reversed?

Reversed and middle of river. Now there's a couple of aspects I hadn't considered. The Dove at that point turns almost 90 degrees and there are outcrops to stand on if I remember correctly so it could appear as if Tony was in the middle of the river. With thigh length waders I suppose this is a possibility but I wouldn't risk it.

Reversed? Nice bit of lateral thinking but again if memory serves me correct it seems to be the right way round.

So what did I have in mind? It's quite prosaic really in one sense. This is about the most popular spot on the Dove and I have been there out of season and practically still had to queue up to cross the stones!

So a shot with only two people on a sunny day in October is amazing.

Either Tony was incredibly lucky or had the patience to wait until there were only two attempting the crossing. The two who are a couple absolutely make the shot for me. Imagine it as empty of people or with a string of them and it is either a straight landscape shot or worse a touristy snap which even the appropriate toning could only improve slightly.

This is a real winner. If I were Tony I'd be contacting the Izaac Walton Hotel nearby. I'd be amazed if its timelessness and blueprint for the Dove Valley doesn't have the owners reaching for their wallets.

I was on the bank but a bit further away than I would like but the people were changing all the time so I had to be quick and it was the last frame on the roll. It is the right way round. It was a 6x6 neg so I could crop quite a lot and just outside the crop either side were spectators. Jean was getting impatient as it was past lunch time and she was hungry. The camera club judge didn't like it and marked it down.

Tony Never mind the judge. Try the Izaac Walton owner's. The hotel is so connected with this part of the Dove since the famous Izaac wrote the Compleat Angler that I think a largeish print say 12x16 minimum would look great in the hotel bar. I was there in 2004 and never saw any prints at all in the hotel. It may be that no-one has ever produced such an evocative print or even offered any prints.

Better still the owners may be crying out for an old fashioned toned silver gelatin print and all they are offered is digi coloured prints courtesy of inkjet.

Fabulous shot Tony.

Strange about the Camera Club Judge not liking it - but it takes all sorts to make the world go round.

Nice shot Tony, I particularity like the delicate light in the tree. Take no notice of the judge - the person was a cretin.
