This picture was taken in 2003, when I took the family - well, all except No 3 son who couldn't get away from University - Heli-skiing in Italy for my 60th birthday treat. This is No 2 son at speed in the sort of fresh powder snow you only find at minus 20 degrees C. Contre-jour light and snow make for tricky metering but so far as I remember I just trusted to the Nikon matrix metering. Focussing was a bit tricky too, an object coming straight at you at speed tests autofocus, but it is still better than hand-focus. I have photographed sport for years and the hit-rate of in-focus shots is much higher with autofocus. For me, anyway.
As usual, although this is an old negative I have re-printed it; I have been wanting to try it with a light, blue toning. There is always a hint of blue when sun shines on snow. It just didn't work; I think the blue toner I have is a bit old, all I got was smudges and blotches of blue instead of the subtle suggestion of blue I had envisaged; also, reading notes on toning, it sounds as though some papers just don't like it, especially RC papers which is what this is on.
I tried prints with more contrast, but lost all detail of the skier. As usual I also tried a bit of dodging and burning, and as usual I ended up with a straight print. Dodging and burning never seems to work for me.

Ah, I skied Courmayeur a couple of times many years ago and then was ski guide in Cervinia for part of a season. It's a very nice area and great food. Also has a very good snow record.
One day when I can afford it I might just give heli skiing a go.

This is the print I got in exchange round 28. As seems usual, the print is much better in real life than in the scan.

Snow scenes are very difficult to manage cos you have detail at either end of the scale and very long area in the middle with nothing in it so increasing contrast makes it look like chalk and charcoal and reducing contrast makes it look totally muddy. Printing for shadows and then flashing paper to get some highlights may work but will often make the highlights muddy because with snow you really need contrast to give it some texture.

I think the best policy would be to print the whole scene whilst dodging the skier. Use quite high contrast which means print time will be critical and difficult to find. But once you have found it then snow should look good with texture. Then burn in skier using normal contrast. You will need to use quite a good size vignette on the skier whilst dodging and burning so it doesn't look obvious.

Good action image with the ski trails behind the subject adding movement to the image.
