A wonderful photo, Vincent. And great use of the format.

Lovely looking print Vincent, but I find the point of interest for me, is the right hand side, so my eyes are taken to that area. I say this as it's the darkest part of the picture, but also the mountains in the background. A good print overall though and I do like the panoramic format.
BTW, can you tell I used to be an EAF circuit judge?

Thanks for your comments Terry and I will consider them if I print this shot again. However, you did sound exactly like typical judges that I've experienced over the years. But at this stage of my life, I print for my own pleasure and not competitions. I do admit there was a stage in my life when camera club competitions were everything to me. Take care of yourself Terry especially through these difficult days ahead.

Oh dear Vincent... Your comment of me sounding like 'typical judges' has worried me, but I'll soon get over it.
Years ago now, I too used to really try to do well in club comps, but once I had won both the Preliminary cups and shields for a few years, and then the Advanced ones, I basically did as you mention, and started to 'print for my own pleasure'. Looking back I think that was the time when the judges stopped liking my work so much. I think this was because my prints etc. didn't follow 'the rules', as written at the beginning of the time when photography started. LOL.
I now belong to a different club, having moved, and I rarely bother putting stuff into any competition because the judges comments are 99% of the time, the same stuff... Oh, and they also keep telling me that with a bit of Photoshop my (darkroom) prints would be so much better. Also they don't always think that they are 'straight and proper' b/w prints as they have a 'colour cast' to them...
But I wish good luck to those that still chase those cups etc. at the end of each year.

Dear Terry,
A valuable lesson from my distant pass has stood me good stead in the intervening years. In the early years of the camera club that I help found a new member showed up one night and he seemed to know all about photography and used quite freely the terms associated with it. He offered to put on a slide show for us featuring his work. We were thrilled, ‘At last someone who knows his way around our hobby’ will give us guidance. Come the night of the slide show and we had a full attendance eager to be shown the road to enlightenment. The show began but after the first 10 minutes, we soon realized that his work was more or less rubbish. A workmate of his told me afterward he was the same about golf, as regards how to grip the club, take the proper stance and how to hold your head. But for all of that he could hardly strike a ball if his life depended on it.
So I decided on one of my principles of photography ‘ When people spout off about it, I say show me your work and then I’ll decide if I’ll take anything you say seriously. I’ve seen your work so you can guess how I might be rating your opinion. But some pointers In B&W photography it is the light areas that catch the eye and not the dark. And to complete your critique with the expression ‘A good print overall though and I do like the panoramic format’ just how cliché is that. Apart from the positive feedback that my print received on this site here are a few more from an international photo site 1. ‘Those clouds...*swoon*. A lyrical and beautiful photograph.’ 2 This is stunningly good, a perfect vista for the Xpan. 3 Bravo, a vista worthy of the treatment given to it by your excellent visual skills Vincent Brady. 4 Excellent photograph - I can only bow down before its beauty!
As a judge maybe you have reached the stage where you only see faults and the beauty of the photos pass you by.
Sometimes it is better to let sleeping dogs lie. In the meantime take care of yourself.
Cheers
Vincent
