Ilford Multigrade IV Fibre
 

Hi all

Having been an Agfa user for many years, I'm now investigating Ilford Mulltigrade IV FB. I was given a box of 16x12 which is probably a few years old but appears to be fine. However, the base seems quite a bit creamier than the latest product which I have in 10x8. I have a feeling I read somewhere that Ilford have changed the base material for the Warmtone but can anyone confirm that the standard product has been changed at all?

Richard, I have some 12x16 MGIV/FB and the base colour is quite white. This stock is a few years old now. I knew about them changing the WT paper colour but not the MGIV.

I just found some 12x9 FB, and that's the same as the 16x12 - both are creamier than the 10x8. They're all coded MGF.1K. The mystery deepens - and if you're getting the impression I'm disorganised you're quite right! It follows the house move and I'm still sorting the darkroom out, a year on from it becoming basically operational ...

I may be stating the obvious but just in case, until it is processed it looks quite creamy in colour.

I'm looking at fully processed prints :)

I've also got some 16x20 MGIV-1K/FB and that is white too.

It's not been stored near chemicals like formaldehyde (methanal)?:confused:

No, all stored in the same place - the only difference being the creamier paper in its box, the whiter in a Quadro paper safe.

If it was given to you it could have been stored in any conditions? Opened in darkroom whilst toning? Do you know? I'd just put it down as an odd box of paper and see what happens with future purchases.

Can't say I recall reading of MGIV having a creamy base (certainly the WT changed as others previously said).

Are you sure it is MGIV in the box - I for one often re-pack other paper into Ilford boxes because they are so well made (most others seem to disintegrate quite quickly)...

I'm certain both the 10x8 and the 12x9 are Ilford. The 12x16 might be something else because as I say, I was given it. Anyway, I'm not going to worry too much about it any more, just use it :). Thanks for the responses.
