Wanted: 4x5 Enlarger

Starting working in 4x5 and need an enlarger. There are a few on SHD but very expensive. Anyone wanting to offload or any ideas where I can find one without selling a kidney?

As always, keep an eye on ebay.co.uk - as that's where I got mine.

As the seller wasn't too far from me, I was able to put in a good bid, as I could take out the carriage cost, which was quite high as the enlarger was both heavy and bulky.

They don't come up that often, so you might want to start saving for one at SHD.

Good luck in your search.

I would second eBay. You find a lot of sellers looking for local pick up due to the size/weight. You can find bargains if you can collect the item. I drove from Glasgow to somewhere miles beyond Aberdeen to get mine, but it was worth it. It depends where you are. There are far more on offer in the southern part of England than up here. I use the LPL 7451 which is a compact type, but very capable. The other option is Gumtree, and local advertising media. All worth a look.

There was a time when there'd be 50+ 5x4 De Vere enlargers listed on Ebay, cheapest would be a 54 or 54a, but even 504's where quite cheap. That was 18-20 years ago when I bought a De Vere 5108 for £600 with 5 lenses and a large Beard easel.

Many LF enlargers went for land fill, my local lab had 3 in a skip on one visit around 2001, unfortunately all damaged in the process, they were going to keep another for me but I went to 10x8 instead.

You might be lucky and find a 5x4 condenser enlarger, I used a Johnson V45 for about 25 years although I swapped the condenser heard for a cold cathode head after a few years. I have another now which I restored about 4 years ago.

If we knew where you are based then perhaps we can point you in the direction of potential sellers.

I know that not everyone appreciates them, but there is an AHEL 1245 enlarger on eBay at the moment. It's in France, so the shipping costs are high (it's big and heavy).

Looking again at the prices of 5 x 4 enlargers at various places, I count myself very lucky, as I paid under £100 for mine, not that long ago. :)

I thought I'd get an email notification if I got replies, clearly not!

Thanks for all the replies, although most of them are just depressing :). I've been keenly watching eBay for a few weeks for one. There's one for sale in a shop in London, a 504 Dichromat mark IV for £1295 - just seems so expensive, though it does look very clean.

Just going to take some patience...meanwhile the almost new Kaiser vp6005 I picked up for £70 keeps me printing 6x6

If you go to "thread tools" you can "subscribe to this thread" and then you should get email notifications.

Have you tried Second-hand Darkroom Supplies (a FADU sponsor - see link at the top of the web page) ?

Gone are the days of very cheap enlargers being had for almost nothing.

LF darkroom stuff is expensive.
