First few drops of rain you get on that fibre board and it'll grow to be an 11x14 :D

Great review Dave.

Would it be feasable to swap the mdf parts with solid wood (before assembly by using the mdf parts as a template) to get a more robust camera, would you say?

I don't think that would be worth the effort, this project is, I think intended as an introduction to large cameras.
