Hello from West London

Hello all,

I'm Michael and I come from London W10... in the murky backwaters of Ladbroke Grove. I learned basic darkroom technique at school a very long time ago and all sorts of circumstances seem to have brought me back to film photography in earnest in the last year or so.

I'd been thinking about dabbling in printing (again) and the corona-whatnot crystallised this into making a sketch of a bathroom-darkroom on the 28th March. I wasn't planning on doing my own processing (you can mess up as many prints as you like but a neg's a neg) but the lab I'd grown to like closed and I got bored, so I've been producing some quite nice negatives at the kitchen sink over the last few weeks.

Anyway, I'm closing in on a first print in the next week or so as I find the last few bits and bobs, and I look forward to being able to trawl FADU archives and maybe pick some brains.

I've always enjoyed architectural photography as I'm interested in buildings, and as I get older I realise that buildings are only as interesting as the people that use them... and I'd love to learn more about taking pictures of them.

Welcome to the forum, Michael. You should have plenty of subject matter in and around London, I should think.

Do you have a particular format that you like to use?

Thank you! I've used 35mm all my life (Pentax ME Super and an old Voigtlander), but last year was lent a 120 TLR of some vintage and prestige... the 6x6 neg is what has led me back to film, and persuaded me to hunt out an enlarger- a Durst M670 with the condenser, lens and bits for 6x6 and 6x7.

Welcome back to the Dark Side! This forum is a fabulous resource and I’m sure if you’ve any questions, big or small, the members will be able to help out in some way or another!

Welcome Michael. The great thing about darkroom prints is that it isn't about pressing buttons not is it about throughput. It's about the enjoyment of "getting there" be that only one print in a session.

Welcome, MichaelJ.
Just wait 'til you see your first print from 120. 35mm is great fun to use, but 120 is a different story in terms of smoothness and tonality.
If you're thinking of some 'people pictures' with your TLR you can comfortably use a film like HP5 and get hand-holdable shutter speeds with great image quality.
