Mystery object - any ideas?!

This is a photo of my father on holiday in Germany in 1956. Probably taken by my mother on his Ross Ensign Selfix 16/20. Question: can ANYONE identify the mystery object on the table in front of him?...

For hanging prints back-to-back to dry, I've started using these. They've got soft but grippy rubber jaws that seem to leave minimal marks on the print surface:

Richard, for printing, I use a Kaiser tray warmer, in conjunction with an angled Kaiser tray thermometer - both good bits of kit. I tend not to worry about stop and fix temperatures, though maybe I...

When does a new post get listed under 'New Posts'?

I've noticed some new posts get listed under 'New Posts' and others don't. Is there any reason for this? Thanks.

Longest you can leave FB prints in water for?

Is there an accepted maximum length of time you should leave FB prints soaking in water (for instance, holding them overnight in an archival washer for drying the next day?) Surely the emulsion/image...

Good practice to use an ND filter on your enlarger lens to lengthen exposure times?

Small enlargements on my Durst 1200 quite often result in inconveniently short exposure times, making it tricky to burn/dodge with any degree of subtlety.

Of course I could solve this simply by...

Identifying cameras by examining the negative

I've found I can confirm which camera I've shot a particular film on by putting the negative on a lightbox and checking the image of the film gate edge under a powerful loupe. Most cameras have a...
