A camera repairman showed me a trick on old leather - he used EvoStick, diluted with EvoStick cleaner, which slows down the operation - and held the surfaces in contact with a plastic bag of water with some books balanced on top. He then finished the job next day with black Cherry Blossom shoe polish and a brush!
