There are two reasons, Carl. The first is personal. While I don't have anything against digital negatives (and I use them myself from time to time), I want to be able to do this with an entirely personal process where I haven't delegated things to unknown software engineers and machines. This is the important reason.
The second reason is that in my experience, if you know what to look for, it's usually possible to tell the difference between a print from a digital negative and one made with a film negative. I don't want to make a class of prints which could be viewed as inferior to my large format prints.
