Cut the film to separate the cassettes. Prepare a leader on the new cassette. You can make a cassette winding tool, if necessary, from a short piece of wooden dowel with a slot cut into one end. There are ways of calculating roughly how many frames you have in each cassette, or you can just guesstimate....

Hmmm...interesting idea Alex. Very clever. And it would certainly get around my aversion to wasting film unnecessarily without having to buy a huge quantity in bulk. It should be easy to figure out how many turns to half the roll...wind on until the roll ends and count the turns, then reverse the winding for half that number ....and then write the number down for the next time I might just try that. I was wondering how I would ever shoot the equivalent of 20 rolls of PanF if I bought it in bulk.

Yes, a very expensive Leica loader. I was having more fun picturing Michael in a bar on Tatooine.

I was about to ask the same question Svend!

Unable to wait for an answer, I looked a Foova up and as far as I can tell, it's a special film cassette for Leica cameras, or the name of the bulk loading unit itself.

Check out the following link, for it shows a quality, well made bulk loader, that's much better made than any of today's plastic models, with it looking like it was made of metal:

Terry, that unit certainly looks the business, doesn't it? My first impression was that it resembled one of those hand-cranked air raid sirens from WWII. Michael pointed me to them on ebay, and one sold for $1500 recently...yikes! You really need to like your Leica to spring for one of those. Fortunately I don't own a Leica so don't yearn for one

36 roll film shoot 12 frames take lens off stick small square of thin tape on film. Rewind film. Pull out film leader with a film retriever, cut end and insert in film tank reel, put film in changing bag with film tank. Load film onto reel, feel for tape cut film. Load tank, cut end of film to shape ready to use next time, label film with number of exposures left.

I'm a bit confused Norm.

Are you saying to take the lens off and then somehow get the camera to hold the mirror up, so allowing one to see the film, to put the tape on? If so, it sounds a bit of a carry on. I think I would rather carry around a changing bag if need be, or better still wait until I get home to the darkroom, where I can cut the film in the dark relatively easily.

Yes set shutter to B setting and lock off with a cable realease, put a small square of tape on your finger end poke it into the camera and stick it onto the film. Sounds more tricky than it actually is to do.

That's another good work-around Norm. Thanks for the idea. All of these ideas are ones I'd not thought of, but would surely work for shooting half a roll of PanF, developing it pronto but not wasting the rest of the roll. You guys are talking me out of buying a bulk loader!

For many years I used a home made hand cranked film winder.
I soon got used to doing the complete process in total darkness.
I have no idea were I put the thing but as I am going to start using bulk again I will happily spend a day in my shed/workshop making a new one.
………………………….
pentaxpete has put up a good video on how to save film by using the same leader time after time. That could be six inches saved each time you load a new cassette.
His use is for automatic take up cameras. I figure it would be good to use with self wound cassettes. Just reusing the same leader.

A combination of bulk film loader and Peters leader dodge would be a great saver.
Cheers.

Seeing Nat's post and his mention of pentaxpete reminds me of something I should say here as he is a long standing member.

Pete these days only tends to participate on Photrio by means of the gallery and it was there on 1 Jun that I had a short exchange with him about some ortho film he has used on a shot of decorative bricks. He mentioned in that exchange that he was being admitted to The Princess Grace Hospital on the 2nd of Jun for an operation. I wished him well and said I'd see him back with shots in a few weeks no doubt

It was clearly a scheduled op but for a cause he did not specify but I have no reason to believe that anything has not gone to plan and no doubt there will be possibly a few weeks recovery anyway

So in summary I hope everything went well for him. Just thought you'd like to know

Mike
