Hi from Yorkshire
Hello everyone,
I just found this site after spending the last week or so looking and reading all about film photography, developing and printing etc. I have been into photography for a number of years and currently have a 400d which has served me well but I am now finding that I want something more from my photography other than just using photoshop and having the images stored on my computer. So I have managed to get hold of a few old slrs and I am running some 35mm film through them to make sure they are fit for purpose and so far I am having a blast! First film has just been finished with my srt 100x and will be off to the lab in the next few days to get sorted, next up will be my srt 101 which I will use this weekend. Once I have tested these cameras I will be starting to shoot black and white and I plan on developing my own films with a view to printing very shortly so I apologise in advance for all the hundreds of questions I will be wanting to ask. So here is my first Which is a good enlarger to get for a noob like me?? Thanks for letting me join what seems like a great place! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

Hi Gareth
Welcome to FADU you've certainly come to the right place for questions to be answered. For a 35mm enlarger to begin with I would suggest a condenser enlarger something like a Durst 370 BW they are easy to operate and have a filter draw that will take the small Ilford multigrade filter sets which are not expensive you should be able to pick up a decent 370 and lens on e-bay. I wish you the best on your new adventure. Richard |

Hi Gareth and welcome to Fadu.I would suggest you look at SDS for a good used enlarger, and also to look at getting an enlarger that you can use for MF negatives, that is, something that takes 35mm to 120 negatives as if in the future you decide that a bigger negative is for you then having just a 35mm enlarger can be an expensive mistake, also, buy the best enlarger lens you can afford as your finished print is as much dependant upon the lens as anything else, a poor lens often results in a poor print.

I bought my present LPL6700 colour from Collectable Cameras who are not far from Goole in East Yorkshire/Humberside. I only paid £70 for it plus another £35 for a Nikon 50mm 2.8 lens. They don't have a very large stock of enlargers but they do sell for reasonable prices. They advertise on their website but never include enlargers, you have to ring up and ask. |

Gareth,
you also could look at the imaging warehouse, another specialist seller of used darkroom equipment, Collectable cameras are very good indeed and I would personally recomend them, I deal a lot from them for Classic Cameras, and they currently list some very good enlarger lenses. but don't often get Enlargers. but they are worth looking at, I don 't know SDS as I have never dealt with them, so take Johns advice there, another place that used to do darkroom equipment is the Camera House, sorry I don't have a link for them, certainly there are some very good bargains around in darkroom equipment these days. Hello everyone,
Thanks for the warm welcome Also thanks for the places to speak to about enlargers, I will be checking them out but my budget is limited right now so enlargers might be held of for a month whilst I get the funds together. So I have finished my first roll of 35mm, and at the weekend this will be going to be developed and fingers crossed all the seals were in good condition and they come out alright but I think I may have messed up when winding the film back in (I opened too soon ) The srt 101 light meter doesn't appear to work even after swapping the battery from the 100x so I will need to get this looked at. Next up for me is getting hold of some black and white film and developer so i can start doing it myself any preferences on black and white? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |
