Hello Julia, welcome to the forum. I guess I still find it nerveracking at times but I guess we all have to accept that it goes wrong at times but don't let it worry you because in the end it usually comes right.
For photographers I think I would go for Frank Hurley who went with Shackleton to the Antartic, Ansel Adams, James Ravilious and Don McCullin.

Hey Julia!

My five cents for film photographers. Robert Adams' stuff is amazing. Jem Southem makes some great colour landscapes of the southern part of England.

As for film photography, it is great. I find it hard these days to pick up a digital camera. There is just something about shooting film and processing and printing the images yourself.

Good luck with your studies!

Silvia

Hi Julia. Welcome to FADU.
Asking for advice on which photographers other photographers think are interesting will get you about one million suggestions. I don't know your personal view of life, or what kind of people interest you, but here goes-
Ansel Adams. Why you keep hearing his name is that he almost founded a particular style of photography. Epic, black and white landscape, devoid of people, shot on BIG cameras. Technically perfect, but to some tastes a little 'samey'. Ansel, though, had a dark twin-
Edward Weston- same era, same big cameras, different style. Landscape too, but also nudes. Weston's personal life was more colourful. Weston was something of a womaniser, and although a great photographer he has slipped under the public's radar.
Robert Mapplethorpe- An American, he was a visionary and technically gifted photographer. His still life flower photos are gorgeous. Mapplethorpe was also Gay, and produced photos the content of which was scandalous. Mapplethorpe was consistently vilified by people who disapproved of his personal life.
Bob Carlos Clarke- A genius, famed for his nudes and portraits, capable of truly beautiful work. Clarke, though, was plagued by mental health issues until he took his own life.
Lee Miller- A woman who started her career as a model, became a photographer, and went on to document the liberation of the Nazi death camps.
So, all sorts of poeple have been 'film photographers'. What kind of person interests you?

I couldn't remember her name-
Vivian Maier. Worked for years as a nanny, and only after her death did it become clear she had devoted years to street photography. Some of her work is very insightful, and during her life she was completely unknown.
If you want important, try W Eugene Smith, who exposed the suffering of people poisoned by mercury dumping in Japan.
Or, as already mentioned, Don McCullin- a man so driven to reveal suffering and wickedness he has faced war, famine and pestilence.

Hi all.
It would be good to use four that are still alive and kicking, otherwise it could be a case of then and now. A struggle I know, but keeping film relevant.
Cheers and welcome Julia

Welcome, Julia.
As you will have gathered, your choice will depend upon what kind of photography interests you most at the moment. Might I suggest that you see if your libray can provide a copy of The Picture Post Album isbn 0-7126-2058-3 ? I think the work of the photographers shown is well worth a look.
You appear to be at the college from which my Daughter graduated - I do hope you enjoy your time there.
