Question Bronica ETRSi Only 12 Images

Can anyone help please, I have the Bronica ETRSi with the mkII winder. I'm new to MF photography and I've only recently got this camera and so far I have only put 2 rolls of Fujifilm Pro 160ns through it. My problem is the winder seems to wind on to the end of the film after the 12th shot. As it's a 645 camera I was expecting about 14-15 shots I have another back which has Ilford Delta 100 loaded on it, but I haven't finished this roll yet so I don't know if it's a film, back or wider problem. All the different elements such as winder and back are genuine Bronica ETRSi and not third party in any way, that is if you can get third party composites. Has anyone ever experienced this before please? And if they have is it fixable without risking making things worse? I'd rather lose 2 or 3 images a roll than damage anything further. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Should be 15 shots per roll of 120 on the ETRSi Mark. Is the counter starting at 1 then winding off the roll when you get past 12 on the counter?

Can you take the winder off and try winding manualy, ? you should get 15 exposures per roll, so the only way to tell what is wrong is to ellimite each part in turn, so I suggest that, with a waste film, or even film backing paper only, you first try taking the winder and winding with the handle, if you only get 12 then try a different back, I would suspect the winder, possibly the contacts where the winder attaches to the camera, maybe be a bad or dirty connection,
Richard

Hi Mark, I have a couple of etrsi and find that as part of the natural operation one looses frames when changing film backs or operating the
Mirror up lever. I have never lost more than two frames and now expect
To lose just one. The beast does take some time to get use to then you'll love it. The only thing that disappoints is that printing 6/45 the long side is projected front to back on the enlarger, but a wall mounted column can overcome the loss of centre to back capacity.
Best regards Hughes.

Hi Mark, the best book if you can find a copy is "The Bronica Manual" by
William Cheung. Or copies from www. Old timer Cameras. Also on line www.butkis.org/chinon
best regards Hughes

You should not lose frames when using the mirror up lever, I never have and I used a Etr for many years, also you should not lose frames when changing backs, at least, again, I never did, I still think that changing one thing at a time isthe best way to go, alternatively searcbh the forum for a thread by Alex Muir, where he had a problem with his bronica and found a specialist repairer, I think that the problem lies with the motor drive, hence take it off and try manual winding, even with a length of backing paper only, if you get fifteen with the manual wind then that is the answer, if you dob't then try the backs, again if you get 15 frames with one back and twelve with another then you have the answer, if nothing works then you have a camera problem, although I can,t see a camera problem,
Richard

I don't either but I think it is a result of getting backs and bodies out of sync as a result of not always winding on after taking a shot or accidentally hitting the mirror up when you don't want it.

I am not a ETRSi user and may be miles away in what I am about to say but as you are new to MF could it be that when you load the back you have wound the backing paper beyond where the back needs the the "Start" line on the backing paper to be.

If I did this on my Pentax 645N then I suspect that it would wind the film beyond the first frame and thus I'd lose a frame or two

It's just a thought and as I said my be miles off the real cause.

Mike

I've always had 16 frames a roll of 645 on 120 film. OK my camera is a Fuji but you would think they'd all be the same?

Yes, with my folders I get 16 frames on a roll, I don't know about other slr's as the only one I have used, but the bronica only give 15 frames, the Fuji's I used years ago, (a folder type with auto lever wind and the Autofocus/film advance) sorry I can't think of the model types, all 645, always gave 16,
Richard
