Default Synthetic Grease

I was one of the lucky ones who rec'd a camera from Xpres, mine turned out to be the Agfa Isorette with the stuck focusing lens.

I have "googled" the problem have found and carried out the solution for getting the front lens free ( just heat it up until the degraded and solid grease gives, then unscrew, no tools or violence needed ! )

Once I have cleaned it all up I need to re-grease the screw thread as I put it back together.

It is recommended that synthetic grease is used to avoid the same problem happening again, but to buy a can / tube for want of the slightest amount seems a bit excessive.

Are there any alternatives that forum members can suggest ?

Many thanks
Ian

I have a tube of silicone grease somewhere, Ian, that I bought for doing cameras.

If you PM me, we'll arrange a way of getting some to you.

You might be able to get a teaspoon of silicon grease from a pool shop. It's used in valves etc. They have supplies of it in bulk.

Vaseline will melt and migrate where it isn't wanted if the camera get warm in the summer, yes it can be used but use it LESS than sparingly.

I use one I got from a bike shop. Finish line Teflon grease which I don't think was expensive. Useful for the bike too.

I'm glad your making progress on the camera Ian...

I used molybdenum bisulfide grease on metallic focus helicoids. If you have a general interest for DIY or any small repair you'll find plenty of applications for it, if you're afraid of having it sitting forever on a shelf after using just a very small amount.

Cheers,M.

Find a small garage, or machine shop (possibly a bicycle repair shop)who will probably let you have a small amount for free.

I'll second the bicycle shop route. They often carry small "tubes" of the stuff...seen it in Halfords I think?

Yep - white Lithium grease (Weldite's TF2) from a bike shop - worked wonders on the threads on an old Elmar, and is great for the threads on Gitzos too. Use very sparingly. A tube goes a long long way . . probably longer than you would ever want to be photographing to be honest.
