Default Imagine - The Colourful Mr Eggleston - BBC1 10:35pm, 14th July

Self explanatory really but note that it is tonight. Sorry about short notice again but I have literally just seen it while browsing through the Radio Times.

A chance to learn a bit more about William Eggleston. I didn't think that The Genius of Photography on BBC did his work any justice. He came across as someone who had difficulty explaining his craft but hopefully a full 50 mins will give us, or me anyway, a better insight.

It has just started if anyone has the time. I'd like to compare notes tomorrow if possible

So that's why I missed it. I read that it was on at 11:00 on another forum!

It's available for download on BBC Player: I'm getting it right now.

Well I learned a bit more about the man from background info supplied by the support cast but very lttle from him little about the "whys", such as why did he change from B&W to colour. If he explained that, then I missed it. It seemed to have something to his love of dye transfer. Does he still get dye transfers done, does he use colour neg? He seems to use 35mm exclusively( Leica) but no mention of what he found special about Leica or why he never considered a move to MF.

Getting useful info from him was like getting blood out of a stone. On the human interest side I thought they might have explained how he made his living prior to his fame and presumably wealth from the first exhibition onwards. I suspect he was independently wealthy and maybe never had to earn a living prior to achieving fame otherwise I think that a livelihood would have been mentioned.

As you will have gathered he just wasn't on my wavelength and my worst fears from the short excerpt on the Genius of Photography were realised.

He was honest enough to say he shoots the "banal" and my inference was that he himself can't explain why certain scenes attract his attention. Fair enough.

I just didn't find him either engaging or informative.

So I am at nearly the opposite end of the spectrum from Carl but others' opinions would be interesting.

Mike and Carl - My one-liner (two up from this post) was a simple reaction immediately after watching the download. I have to say I got nothing at all from the programme. Agreed that the MOMA exhibition may well have been a landmark; but I suspect that Szarkowski could have managed the same landmark with almost any other colour photographer around at the time. Given Eggleston's grabby style of anti-compositional shooting, it was no surprise to see camera shake from time to time. To me those are all negative elements.

Carl, the current issues of Ag and B&W photography landed in here yesterday; so it was a pleasure to see your work in the former and Paul Gallagher's in both. Certain other members of this forum got a look-in too

I second that. Provoking is what he does best in more ways than one.
