I've been mixing my own D-72 (Dektol) for about five years and, as the metol I bought was quite dark in colour, I always have a black sediment in the bottles of stock. I use coffee filters when I'm diluting it for use and have never had any issues with my prints at all.
That being said, I recently bought a fresh supply of metol from Freestyle which arrived pure white with the intention to use it for making D-76.
I'm happy to risk paper with possibly suspect chemicals, but never my negatives!
