Foma 100 colour cast
Open to any insight here, as this has me baffled. Yesterday afternoon I exposed 5 sheets of 5x4 Fomapan 100. In the evening I processed 4 sheets in PMK Pyro 1+2+100, in a 'slosher' tray. Exactly to my usual routine: 2 minute prewash, 10 minutes development, fix 4 minutes in Ilford hypam. This should produce negatives with a yellow/brown stain and very sooth tonality. However- when I turned on the lights last night I found 3 sheets looking very faintly stained and 1 sheet looking like Lawrence Llewelyn Bowen had been at it. The colour is somewhere between Magenta and Fuschia. See scan. These 2 sheets were processed side-by side. I have been using PMK for my sheet film for at least 13 or 14 years and never seen anything like this. I recently refilled some holders from a new box of Foma 100, and it is just possible these 2 sheets came from different boxes. However, that would suggest a very serious failure in film manufacture between boxes. Anyone seen, or heard of, anything like this? I'll be mixing fresh PMK before processing any more film, and will process a couple of sheets before doing any more 'real' developing. ps- the 'pink' sheet was re-fixed and washed again to no effect. |

Just for clarity.
There's no chance of the film having stuck together at any point during processing? All of the sheets of film have the same notch code?

Notch codes match (just visible on the left of the scan). Sheets are processed in a tray divided into 4 sections by projecting studs, which stop them sliding over each other or sticking. I have had one or two occasions when sheets stuck to the bottom of the tray, and the ant-halation didn't come out in the pre-wash. This was always cured in the post-fix wash. These were re-fixed and re-washed to no avail. Thanks for looking! |

Is "side-by side" using one dish with two sheets of film in it?
Or two separate dishes alongside each other with a piece of film in each at processed simultaneously? There are a few mentions on the internet of purple casts, mostly on about prewashes and fixing. Some people say the purple cast has no effect on the final print or scan. One person said the cast will vanish if left in uv light from the the sun. https://www.photo.net/discuss/thread...3016e60a019e39 Hypo clear appears to work slightly. https://www.thephotoforum.com/thread...e72e0959161819 I have been lucky so far as I have never seen this phenomenon before. I googled "purple casts on negatives" and found several references, all pushing towards the fixer age, type and duration and of course, pre washing and final washing. Good Luck

This was 4 sheets in a single, divided, tray where all 4 sheets were exposed to the same developer/fix, had identical agitation, and same wash. I've found some mentions of purple/magenta spots on Foma 100 but this is somewhat beyond that. Thanks for answering. |

That really is an odd result skellum.
Although I have no solution for that one, it would be interesting if it did print or scan happily as a couple of people have said on the internet. I would have thought that the purple cast would upset printing if you use multigrade papers requiring filters to sort out contrast. Those who say they printed ok may have been using graded papers. Cheers.

Hi Nat.
The 'stained' sheet is one of 2 exposures I made at different shutter speeds, so I do have an alternative version of it. The stain is so intense I suspect that if trying to print it on VC paper it will act like a Grade 5 filter, and produce a very hard image. I have just a few sheets of Ilford Gallerie Matt left, so will perhaps try it on graded paper just to see how it prints. I should probably ask the administrators to give this thread a more descriptive title just in case someone ever comes searching with a similar problem. |

Thanks Bob. Perhaps: Foma 100 clour cast. That might make it easier to find in a search. Not that I have an answer to offer, unfortunately.

Do you develop your film emulsion side up or emulsion side down in the tray ? If emulsion side down the film could have, in some way, had contact with the tray's base and received less developer / development. If so a fix for this is to have expoxy resin blobs over the base of the tray.
