Default Electrical help: Durst Laborator 1200/CLS450 Head.

I just won a Durst Laborator 1200 with CLS450 dichromat head for £1.20 on ebay. Fortunately it is in Plymouth about 4 miles from me so no issue with collection.

The seller has stated that the transformer/timer has a problem and it blows lamps immediately. It sounds to me like the transformer windings might have shorted out through damp/corrosion.

Doesn't the transformer only power the lamp?

If so, wouldn't any transformer 240V in 24V out with sufficient power capabilities 10A be okay (like this one 240V-24V 10A) when used with a timer (which again is basically just a timed switch?

TIA for any assistance.

You don't need anything that complicated to run a lamp. That is a switch mode power supply. You just need a transformer.

However... they are much cheaper than a transformer so probably worth a go.

Steve.

Thanks Steve, that is my take on it too.

I would like to use it with my Analyser Pro but don't want to do anything that may put it at risk.

Hi Ed,

Take the 4 screws out of the power supply and look for an exploded blue capacitor.

You will have to double the cost of your enlarger to £2.40 though as the part is £1.20. Its easy to find the part on ebay.

I was going to buy that Enlarger from the seller directly but he wouldn't pack it!

I have a new CLS500 head and Durst Power Supply for that Enlarger if you want to make an offer, but alas, as its my only spare, I cant let it go for £1.20..

Thanks Marc, I'll have a look tomorrow after I collect the Enlarger, I assume the capacitor is an electrolytic, if it's exploded how will I discover its value?

Just had a look at the ebay listing - That looks like a Rayco stabiliser/timer unit. Pretty crude by modern standards, but most of the internal components are still available.

I would suggest the first thing to replace is the ceramic lamp holder inside the head. Then measure the voltage across the two pins before risking another lamp. If it is still causing trouble, we can dig a little deeper.
