A sometimes Developer?
Does anyone have a recommendation for a developer that can be used with films that are to be scanned?
I was about to try some Rodinal, which I'd hope to overcome some logistical problems with regard to storage/longevity for the microphen/ID11/Perceptol that I tend to use. But I've read that it will may create grain which is more difficult to scan - it's not something I'd thought about much before now - though I have had difficulty in scanning some films because of what seems to be exaggerated grain.

I feel that this thread is in danger of straying into the unwelcome territory of scanning. Please ensure answers directly address the OP question, if it becomes a discussion on scanning/scanners then it will be closed.

Aculux 3 from patterson is supposed to be ''optimised'' to develop film for scanning, although I have no personal knowledge as I have never used it, Richard

Thanks all.
I have no wish to discuss scanners - I've got one and not looking to change it. I'm simply interested in making the 'best' negative to scan, so to speak. At the moment I generally shoot on pan-f, fp4 and hp5.

This comment will be a bit like the joke answer to the question of how do I get from A to B.
It may be better not to start from A. By that I mean I have heard but have no experience, that C41 developed film scans better so that's probably Ilford XP2 Plus. From Ilford C41 film you will at least have negs for the future designed to print well on darkroom paper which is what you will inevitably want to do once the way is clear for a darkroom to be made. I scan all my negatives and so far the only film developer I have used is ID-11. I am personally very happy with the results which have a good even contrast distribution etc.

That is true. C41 films scan very well because there is no silver left in it when development is done. The silver grains in conventional B&W films tend to scatter the light. The dyes in C-41 films don't

simply develop the negative much more flat that for enlarging and don't let your highlights go too far. I find Diafine works well that way naturally and when I use rodinal, which is my favorite developer for medium format, I use high dilutions, 1:100 or 1:150 and minimal agitation.
Otherwise there is no real developer that is best just as for the normal way to convert a negative into its final form. |
